“Olivia left a note for me. My sister, Olivia King. The one you murdered... or was it Dominic who murdered her?” Anna asked, and Diaz spun her around and looked at her clearly for the first time since he’d met her.

“You remember her, don’t you?” Anna asked, a smile turning up the corner of her lips. “Let me guess, she learned all about your operation here and Dominic was too weak to do anything about it, so you took matters into your own hands. Am I right?” she asked, it all making sense to her now.

He stared at her, barely breathing. For once, Diaz Smith seemed at a loss for words.

“I’ve never loved you. In fact, I can’t stand you. All I wanted was to find my sister’s body and lay her to rest. Now that I’ve done that, I don’t care what happens to me,” she lied.

Diaz ground his teeth, slowly shaking his head. “You are going to pay for this like no one else has before you. This is going to hurt, Anna.”

She drew a deep breath, steeling herself.

Diaz jolted her forward, dragging her to a pole. He spun her around and slammed her back against it. A rope wrapped around her waist, securing her in place. As the rope tightened, it cut into her skin, but she didn’t wince. She wondered why they were tying her up standing, then decided she didn’t want to know.

Diaz finally looked at her, his eyes burning with hatred. “You thought you could fool me... now look where it’s gotten you. You stupid bitch,” he growled, his breath hot on her face.

She didn’t flinch, she didn’t scream, she didn’t give him the reaction he wanted. His voice was menacing, but it wasn’t void of emotion. She took pleasure in that—this betrayal would hurt Diaz for some time to come. It wasn’t the result she wanted, but at least she’d made him feel some pain.

She stared defiantly.

He pressed the tip of his knife into her throat.

“How is Jackson, Anna?” he whispered in her ear.

Suddenly the tables had turned and her breath hitched in her throat.

“You didn’t think I knew about that?” Diaz nodded. “The men following you—they were Dominic’s. He said you couldn’t be trusted, and he was right. But do you know who could be trusted? Ryley. He was released yesterday. They couldn’t hold him on any charges, and I had a man waiting at his mother’s house for him to come home. He didn’t want to talk, but he did. He told me about Jackson, the lead agent on my case. I went back and looked at the footage, Anna, and the day you saved Ryley. It was interesting that you warned the agent back.” He grabbed her chin, pulling her face to his. “You are going to burn in hell!” he screamed in her face. “But you’re going to do one last thing before I kill you the same way I killed your sister.”

Diaz nodded slowly. “The FBI think they’re infiltrating me, but I’ve been infiltrating them.” He laughed, a callous, haunting laugh.

A man stepped into Anna’s peripheral vision and she blinked.

She’d seen him before, with Jackson.

“This is Will. He’s the reason I knew about Alex, and he’s how I knew you had turned... he leaked the information to Ryley,” Diaz said proudly. “I should thank Jackson for discovering your secrets for me.”

She swallowed hard as her eyes pinned Will.Traitor!

“Everyone has a price, Anna. You included,” he said as Rowan spun a barrel toward her while two other men came forward to pour gallons of fluid into the barrel. She could smell the formaldehyde.

Diaz grabbed her phone from her pocket. “Message him. Tell him to meet you here. If you do, I’ll give you a quick death.”

She looked straight ahead, refusing to answer. He would not give her a quick death. Not a chance.

Diaz exhaled heavily. “Give me the syringe,” he said, holding his hand out.

Anna’s pulse rocketed and she wondered how fast it could beat before she had a heart attack. That would be a preferable outcome.

Rowan passed him the syringe and she frowned in confusion when she saw it. She was expecting it to have a needle, but it was just the plastic syringe.

Diaz grabbed her jaw, forcing her mouth open before shooting the liquid into her throat.

She coughed, her throat burning as she struggled to breathe. She folded forward, but Diaz grabbed her hair, slamming her head back against the pole.

“That was a few drops, Anna. Imagine what drowning in it feels like. That’s how Olivia felt,” he said with a crooked smile.

Her stomach burned like it was on fire and she retched, aiming for Diaz’s shoes, but nothing came out. Her body felt like it was on fire and she fought to breathe. She wanted to curl up in the fetal position, but Diaz was not going to let that happen.

“Message him!” Diaz demanded.
