She looked straight ahead, but it was harder to remain impassive now that she knew what would come next.

He forced her jaw open and she gagged as liquid, more than before, shot into her mouth. She tried to spit it out, but she wasn’t fast enough, and she felt her legs buckle beneath her. She slid down as her head spun, and she blacked out. Diaz grabbed her hair again, pulling her back up.

She drew in a deep breath, but it only made the fire in her lungs worse.

“I won’t say this again—message him!” Diaz growled.

Anna wheezed in a breath. She stared at the phone a long minute.

How much longer could she survive? Was it worth protecting Jackson?

Would he do the same for her?

She drew another long breath.

Hating herself, she took the phone.

JACKSON

“Where’s Will? I can’t get hold of him,” Jackson said as he sped toward the dome.

“He’s not answering. I’ve traced his phone, and it’s at his house,” Max said.

“I’m going to the dome,” Jackson said, lowering his foot on the accelerator.

“Jackson, this might be a trap. Why would Anna message you telling you to meet her here tonight? It doesn’t make sense. If there’s a shipment, we can stop the trucks on the road,” Max said.

“Because she’s in trouble,” Jackson responded without hesitation.

“You don’t know she’s in trouble. This reeks of a set-up,” Max said as Jackson’s phone chimed.

“She’s in trouble,” Jackson repeated, concentrating on the winding road ahead of him. He realized how hard he was gripping the steering wheel and made a conscious effort to relax. He needed to conserve energy for whatever lay ahead.

“You shouldn’t have responded, and you should at least wait for backup,” Max said.

Jackson veered off the road, pulling the car into the trees. He jumped out, running on foot through the woods. As the trees began to thin, he circled the dome, dropping a small black shopping bag every few hundred yards.

He slowed as he neared the entrance she said she’d meet him at. Jackson climbed up the tree for a better view. He couldn’t see her, but he could see a guard slumped on the ground against the wall with a puddle of blood beside him.

Jackson frowned. Anna would’ve hidden him... unless she hadn’t had a chance to.

He looked for more guards, but couldn’t see any.

Where are you, Anna?

Jackson jumped from the tree, landing in a crouched position, then sprinted forward.

As he neared the guard, he saw his throat had been slit.

Jackson pressed his back against the wall, then pulled the remote from his pocket, pressing the button.

His eyes lifted to the woods as the trees lit up the night sky in a fiery blaze.

The door swung open, almost smashing Jackson in the face, but he was prepared for it. He grabbed the handle, stopping it from closing as three men ran out to look at the explosions. Jackson fired shots into their backs and darted inside.

The factory was flooded with large overhead lights hanging from the high ceiling. Jackson ran forward, using the processing equipment for cover. He knew he needed to move fast.

He followed the sound of voices, creeping forward like a silent predator.
