I’d woken up early and sat there getting myself into a tizzy. What if I got pregnant? Would he think I did it on purpose? Crap! By the time he woke up, I was about to freak out but somehow was able to share my fears with him in a calm manner.

When he didn’t freak, my anxiety began to lessen, but in the back of my mind, the thought still scared the crap out of me. I mean, I was barely surviving. How could I take care of a baby and try to get my business back off the ground?

I forced myself to put the fears aside and got ready to go down. When Charlotte handed me her phone, I was befuddled as to why the woman wanted to speak with me. At the same time, I was rather curious, too.

I slipped into the living room with Charlotte’s phone, taking it off mute before I put it to my ear. “Hello?”

“Ms. Novak, this is Carol Stevenson. We met briefly yesterday at the country club.”

“Yes, ma’am. I remember you.”

She hesitated for a moment. “I’m very sorry that we got off on the wrong foot, and I wanted to apologize. I had just fired an employee that had been with us for a long time, and I was upset. I took that out on you, and I am very sorry about that.”

“I appreciate you calling to tell me that,” I paused, “and I’d like to also apologize for how I snapped back at you. I was very rude.”

She chuckled. “No, to be honest, I needed that. How are you? I heard about the accident in the parking lot. John didn’t hurt you, did he?”

“He reopened some stitches, but I’ll be okay.”

“Well, I’m afraid he is the one that was fired. He showed up intoxicated at work, and I had to let him go. Someone was supposed to give him a ride home, but he walked away when they went to get their keys.”

“He was arrested,” I told her.

“Yes, I was made aware of that.” She sighed. “I also had to fire someone else, and that’s why I am calling.”

“Okay—” What the heck did that have to do with me?

“I let our current event coordinator go. It’s a long story, but a few things that you said kind of put me over on the decision. I looked you up online, and you have a very nice website. I was wondering if you would be interested in working for us at the country club.”

My jaw dropped. “Are you serious?”

“Yes, we do at least sixty weddings a year, plus we have a lot of corporate events and private parties that happen here. We need someone who would be able to handle all of that.”

Sixty weddings? In my mind, I was throwing rice in the air as I giggled like a schoolgirl. On the outside I remained calm. “But you don’t know me. Why would you want to hire me?”

“Well, like I said, I checked on you, and I know you don’t have many clients right now. I’m sorry for digging behind your back, but I needed to find someone fast. I was hoping that this partnership would help not only you, but me. I have twelve active events that need attention right now, and I can’t handle all of them along with everything else.”

“Wow, Carol, I’m a little in awe.”

She laughed softly. “I’m sorry for springing this on you, but despite the way we met, I found I liked you. I was impressed by the fact that you wanted to fight for your clients, and you were one hundred percent correct about those stupid centerpieces. They were awful.”

I chuckled. “Yes, they were.”

“The salary to start would be forty-five thousand, and you would have full medical benefits, plus a ten percent raise after six months.”

Did she just say forty-five thousand? Holy cow!!! I’m adding confetti to the rice mixture in my mind. Maybe a few sparklers, too! “When do you need to have an answer?”

“Well, as soon as possible. If you took the job, I’d want you to start as soon as you can. I understand that you probably have other things to take care of, but it would be great to have you onboard by next weekend.”

I blinked, astounded by her offer. Could I get all of it done in a week? Could I find a place to stay here? Get my stuff packed back home? What about my own business? Would it be possible to work at the country club, meet some people, and then strike out later when I had a better game plan? Oh, hell, yes.

“Okay. I’d need the week to try and find a place to live and get my stuff packed back in Plattsville.”

“Okay, you’ll take the job?”

“Yes, I will, Carol. Ironically, I was just planning on moving out this way and starting my business in Millerstown. I know I won’t be working for myself if I take this position, but I will be doing what I want, planning weddings and events.”

“That sounds perfect, Ms. Novak.”
