“Yeah, I’m done,” I muttered softly. “I’ll get you a sandwich.”

I changed my clothes and made lunch. After lunch, I did some laundry and parked my butt on the couch to do some job searching. My cellphone rang, and I almost sent it to voicemail, but I realized it was a local number. Peter hadn’t left me his number, so this might be him.

“Mrs. McMillian?”

“Yes, this is she.”

“Mrs. McMillian, my name is Thomas Sanders, and I own Brighton Technologies. I’m sorry for calling you like this, but your name was passed along to me today.”

“It was? For what?”

“My current chief financial officer quit rather unexpectedly, and I need to find someone as quickly as I can.”

I blinked and blinked again as the words sunk into my mind. I sat up quickly. “Wow, um, okay. I’m sorry, you surprised me. Mr. Sanders, I apologize for not knowing much about your company, but I’d be delighted to supply you with my resume and speak with you about your company and the position.”

“Would you be able to send your resume over now and then meet with me at four-thirty this afternoon?”

“Absolutely,” I told him and grabbed my pen to jot down the information. When I got off the phone, I immediately brought up my email and sent over my resume with a quick cover letter. Then I began to search the company as I sent a text to Laura to see if she would be available for an hour or so.

With the details ironed out, I started reading about Brighton Technologies. I devoured their website, then searched them through some other sources and read everything I could until I had to change again quickly. Laura no sooner stepped in than I was stepping out.

I was ten minutes early for the interview and was asked to have a seat until his secretary could retrieve me. The office was nice, but as I was led down a hallway by a sweet, older woman, I realized it was packed. People and boxes were everywhere.

I was shown into his office, and he came around the desk with a wide smile. I liked him instantly. “Mrs. McMillian, it is a pleasure to meet you, and I am sorry to hear about your husband and your mother.”

I was surprised that he knew of both of them. “Well, thank you, sir.”

“Have a seat, and so that you are aware, I was a good friend of Steward McMillian’s. We played golf quite often together.”

“Oh, you know, I thought you looked familiar. I probably saw you at one of their events.”

“Yes, I am sure that we did cross paths. So, let’s get down to business.”

We went over my resume; he asked questions, I asked questions. He was very impressed that I had spent the afternoon researching their company and already knew quite a bit about it, and I was equally impressed by him and the company. When we finished, he asked me a question that made me feel like the floor was about to drop out from under me.

“Why were you terminated from your last employer?”

I forced myself not to squirm. “Do you want the real answer or the sugar-coated one?”

He chuckled. “Let me hear the real one.”

So I gave him an abbreviated explanation about the debt and stated only that his life insurance wasn’t enough to cover it all. Then I made sure he knew that all of the debt was paid off. “I have practically nothing in my account, and we are living very cheaply right now, but all of the debt is gone.”

He studied me carefully. “That was a tremendous burden to have left on your shoulders while you dealt with your grief. I have one question for you, Faith. Would you ever steal from me?”

“Never, sir.”

He nodded. “I am very impressed with you, Faith. Normally, I would never do this, but I am so impressed with you, and I know you would be the perfect fit for our company. I would like to recommend you to the board for the position. They would have to vote on it, but I have no doubt that they will approve. You are everything that we could want.”

I wanted to cry, and it took everything in me not to. “Thank you, Mr. Sanders. You don’t know how much that means to me.”

“Well, when Peter gave me your card this morning, it was like fate was shining down on us.”

“Peter?”

“Yes, he’s handling the construction of our new office building. It will be ready in February. I mentioned in a meeting with him that my CFO had taken a dramatic hike, and he passed me your card.”

“I didn’t realize that.”
