“Well, I think he might be happy to hear that you are considering staying in town. I will get your information to the board, and one of them should be in contact tomorrow to set everything up. As far as I’m concerned, you have the job if you want it, but we do have to go through proper channels.”

“Thank you, Mr. Sanders, I am very interested.” And I was. I liked him and his company, and the benefits package was more than I had expected. I knew I would enjoy working with him.

When I found out Peter was at the house, I was both thrilled and scared. What if I told him that I was going to stay, and he didn’t want me to stay? But hadn’t Peter given Mr. Sanders my card? How had he gotten my card in the first place? I was wondering what I was going to say to him as I pulled into the driveway and found the house dark.

Did we lose electricity? I peered into the house and saw the light on in the back; maybe they were in the kitchen and forgot to turn the front lights on. I stepped in and called out to them, flipping on the light switch and stepping toward the archway of the living room.

“Now, Luke.” Peter's deep voice drifted through the dark, and then lights turned on. Only they weren’t table lamps; they were colorful little bulbs on an artificial tree. Luke was jumping up and down, and Peter looked slightly nervous, but also proud of himself. On the table were drinks and silverware.

I opened my mouth to speak, and instead covered my face and started to cry.

“Oh, boy, we made her cry again,” I heard Luke say as I began to cry softly, and then Peter’s arms were around me.

“Hey, what’s wrong? We thought you would be excited.”

“I am,” I said around a sob.

“Then why are you crying?”

“Because you did all of this.”

He smiled and shrugged. “I bought a tree, no biggie. Luke helped me put it up and get dinner ready. We just need to warm our plates, and then we can sit in here and eat.”

“Do you like it, Mom?” Luke asked from my side.

“I love it, Luke.” I ruffled his hair.

“Okay, can we eat now?” he asked.

“Let me get dinner warmed, and you get changed, and then you can tell me where you were all dressed for business.” Peter went to step back, and I grabbed his face and pulled it to me, surprising him with a kiss.

“Thank you,” I whispered as Luke muttered yuck and then laughed. I turned before I started crying again and went to the bedroom to change. I put on leggings and a sweater and found the food waiting for me on the coffee table. Luke and Peter were just sitting down. The only lights on were that from the Christmas tree.

“So I might have gotten a job,” I said as I got settled on the floor beside Peter.

Peter’s face snapped my way. “Around here?”

I nodded as I chewed. “Would that bother you if I stayed around?”

He grinned at me. “I think you already know the answer to that question, and if you don’t, I can show you.”

My toes instantly tingled, and I glanced at Luke; he watched us with oblivion written on his face. I laughed.

“So, where is the job? What did they say?”

“Well, the man I spoke with said if it were up to him, he’d hire me immediately, but he needs to get it approved with the board.”

“That’s fantastic, Faith. Do you like the company?”

“Yes, very much.”

“How did you find them?” he asked right before he shoved food into his mouth.

I stared at him for a moment. “Funny that you should ask that. I didn't find them; they found me. It seems that someone handed Mr. Sanders my business card this morning.”

Peter tried not to grin as he chewed, but after he swallowed, he couldn’t hold it back. “Well, that was nice of someone to do that.”

“Where did you get my card?”
