With that decided, I logged on to my laptop and started reading over the paperwork that Scott sent me. I had papers to sign to accept the position, tax forms to complete, confidentiality forms to fill out, and that was just for the job. He also slipped in the packet of information on the polygraph class. I chuckled when I saw it. It included all the registration forms, plus what to expect, what to bring, and what to do to prepare before I arrived.

My phone rang, and I saw it was Henley. “Hey, man. How are you?”

“I’m good. How was my sister this morning?”

“I don’t know. I dropped her off last night.”

Henley laughed. “No, you didn’t. I saw your truck there this morning. Do you honestly think I don’t know you two are seeing each other?”

I winced. The parking lot at her complex had been packed last night, and I’d had to park in a different spot. “Wait, hold on. We arenotseeing each other. Riley and I are most definitelynotseeing each other.”

“So, you just slept with my sister because she was drunk,” he said, and I didn’t reply. “Or do you two do this often while you’renotseeing each other?”

“Lee, you know that I care about your sister.”

“Yeah, you’ve been in love with her since we were kids. I was hoping that you two were finally going to get together.”

“That’s not happening.”

“Says who? You? Or Her?”

I sighed. “It’s mutual.” I didn’t want to throw her under the bus. “Besides, I’m gonna be out of town for a while.”

“What, you going on vacation?” He laughed.

“No, I got the county detective position, and they are sending me away to polygraph school.”

“No shit?”

“Yeah, I just found out an hour ago.”

“Ethan, that’s awesome! Man, I know you have been working on that process for a while. Shit, you were talking about doing it ten years ago. I’m glad you did. Damn, my boy’s gonna be a county dick. Who else knows?”

I chuckled. “Only my parents. I haven’t said anything to anyone else yet.”

“Not even Riley?”

“Why would I tell your sister?”

“Because you love her. How long is the polygraph class?”

“Twelve weeks, and it’s in Georgia.”

“Wow. That’s a long training. When are you going to tell Ry?”

I blurted out a laugh. “She’ll find out this weekend with everyone else.”

“Oh, man, that is gonna be fun! You are crazy, but okay. Can’t wait to see how she reacts.” He laughed heartily, and for just a second, I wondered if maybe she would react to the news.

It didn’t matter what she did, though. I was leaving in a month, and I’d be gone for twelve weeks. I just needed to keep my distance for the next four weeks. Then by the time I got back, hopefully, I would be over Riley.
