“Alright, let me know when you finish, and happy reading.Remember, don’t tell anyone about this, Ju—Zander.”He laughed as he realized the blunder.“You are going to find it very interesting, and I think it is going to answer some questions for you as well.”

“Thanks,” I told him, somewhat confused about what questions he might have thought these books would answer.

He reached for the door, but before he opened it, he turned back to me.“And in case you are wondering, I’m rooting for you, too.I’m not a huge fan of Hugh’s.I think you would be a much better match for her and be able to lead beside her well without being taught everything.Hugh still has no clue about half of what our society is about.”

“Kind of hard to know it all when he’s only been in our world for a short time.”

“Right, and not a hundred plus years like you.I mean, if you factor in Julian’s years.”

“Very true.”

“I’ll leave you to it.Just make sure to lock down your mind while you read them so that no one gets into your head.”

“You got it.”I closed the door and took the box to the sofa. Before I even opened the box, I locked down my mind.

When I peeled the flaps back on the box, I pulled out six, one-inch leather-bound journals.“Wow,” I whispered as I opened the first page and saw it marked as #6.For a moment, I stared at the handwriting on the page. This was done old school by hand with ink.Something that was a lost art now.

I found book one, and leaned back on the sofa, cracking open the lid to read the first page.

Dear Garrett – If you are reading this, then I am gone.I had hopes when you were born that I would see you grow into adulthood, but alas, that was not to happen. What I am leaving you here is a look into my past.Answers to questions I never told anyone, and information you will share with people as you see fit.

I want to share the crucial times in my history, hard decisions that needed to be made, and more about myself.Know that when your mother and I came together, you were the greatest gift she could have ever given me.If Julian had lived, I don’t know that I would have ever had your mother in my life again. That alone is a double-edged sword because Julian was so important to both of us.

I wish that you would have had the opportunity to know him back then.He was my best friend.Even when we were held apart by distance or circumstance, I still believed he would do anything for me or our breed.Especially since Julian should have rightfully been the master but passed the position on to me because he preferred to work the field than deal with the hard decisions it took to run everything.I sometimes wished that I had fought him on that, but at the time, my arrogance prevailed, and I wanted the position.Little did I know all the heartbreak and pressure that decision would cause me.

If I could turn that position over now, there would be but two people I would entrust it to.One is your mother and my loving mate, Kristin.Know that I do, and always have, loved her more than life itself. She has worked hard to learn about our world and all that I do.She will be a just ruler. The other person I would entrust this job to is dead.Only he might not be.There is a piece of me that believes he lives on in someone else’s body.

What?I stared astounded at what he had written. Why would Alex think such a thing? The only way to find out was to keep reading.

Everyone believes that Julian died that day and was staked by something as he fell from the cliff, but I saw the truth in Kristin’s mind as we mated.Julian wasn’t staked; he was dead from the fall, and she laid him in the sun with tender loving care. She watched his body turn to ash, and she prayed that he would one day come back to her.

Those two are destined to be together, Garrett. They are destined to bring our breed back to greatness and lead our people.I leave it in your hands now to find him and get him back to her. That will be a challenging task, especially since I believe that Julian is now under the close protection of my brother, Joseph Portage. But there is more. The child that Joseph raises as his own is not of his blood. He is of mine.

I jerked upright on the sofa. What the fuck?Alex was my father?
