“My sister’s mate, Hugh.He’s the man I love.”
His brows jumped.“Wow, okay.Does your sister know about this?Wait, is this why your sister sent you away?”
“No, I decided to leave.Kristin didn’t make me go.I did something that upset her, and she gave me a choice of punishment.I could stay confined within the compound for six months, or I could leave.I was furious, and the last thing I wanted to do was live in a cell for half a year, so I left.”
“Did your sister know how you felt?”
“Yes.”
“Are you sure she didn’t give you those choices because of your feelings for her mate?”
“No.”I sighed and stepped around him to sit on the bed again.“I hate to admit it, but she was right to punish me.She knew how I felt about her mate and how he felt about me.Once the baby is born, I know that she would have released him from their mating to be with me.I was angry that day and not thinking, so I left.”
“Do you wish you hadn’t?”
I shrugged as he sat beside me.“Some days I wish I was still there.Other days, no.I’m glad I got to see the shit that is going down out here.”
“Is he the reason you haven’t wanted me around?”
I barked a small laugh.“Yeah.I didn’t want to get involved with you because I know what it means to bond with someone of our kind.I also know that I want to go back to him when I can.”
“I get that, but you still have over five months, and you haven’t seen them in over half a year.Maybe they care more about each other now.Maybe he won’t want to leave her.”
“I have thought about that, but I also know that Zander is in that compound with them, and Kristin won’t be able to avoid the connection that they share for long after the baby is born.I know she will go to him.”
“And when she does, that leaves the door open for him to come to you, right?”
I nodded.“At least that’s what I hoped.”
“But in the meantime, why not make the best of it.What if I promise to release you once the year is up?You go your way.I’ll go mine.I know what’s up, Lena.I could accept that.”
“You could accept having me for five, six months and then letting me go just like that?”I shook my head.“Corbin, you have no clue what kind of bond you are looking at.We wouldn’t just be bonded; we would end up mated.Reborns have a powerful attachment, and our desires are so much stronger than others.”
“It would be worth it to know.I mean, since I would be going into this with my eyes wide open, I would know that this relationship will be short-lived, but I would be able to understand it so much better, and I know that it would make us both stronger.I know you weren’t listening back there, but Bark said that he learned that they will start coming this way and searching this area again for us.They know we are here.We need all the strength that we can get.”
Well, shit!I hadn’t heard anything that Bark had said in the briefing.What Corbin said was very accurate.If that was the case, and the humans would start coming after us, then we needed to be strong.I stared at Corbin for a few moments and got lost in his light-green eyes for a moment.
“If we did this, Corbin, you would have to promise me that you would release me.I won’t fall in love with you.My heart belongs to another.”
“I understand that, Lena.I think having mutual trust and friendship might be better for us both.We could be strong together, and I promise I would release you, and I’ll try not to fall in love with you.”He grinned as he said the last part.
I snickered as I shook my head.“I think I’m crazy to consider this but fine.We can bond, and I can help you try to remember who you are.”
His smile grew exuberant, and his eyes twinkled.“Great!When do we start?”
I stood and glanced down at him before I walked to my door and locked it.I turned back around and gave him one of my most sultry looks as I reached for the buttons on my blouse.“Get undressed, Corbin.Your world is about to reach new dimensions.”
