She glared at Portage but spoke to me.“Hankshaw, as in the son of Henry Hankshaw?”

“Yes, is that a problem?”

“No.You could have told me your father was an elder.”

“It never came up.”

She shook her head and glanced around.“Is there a place we can clean up?It’s been a long two days.”

“By all means,mi casa es su casa,” he said with a bit of a bow.

“Yeah, right,” she muttered with a roll of her eyes, and Portage chuckled.

“I will have my men show you to your rooms.I am sure we will talk again soon.”

With that, he walked away.“Damn, Angelina, were you trying to get us kicked out or killed?”Gideon said softly as a few men directed us toward a door.

“He’s lucky I didn’t try to take his head off,” she hissed toward him.

“Look, be nice.We need him,” Gid responded.

“Fine,” she ground out as we entered a door and into a hallway.“But just know this isn’t going to come without a cost.”

We were led down a couple of hallways and then came to a bank of elevators.Angelina looked past them to a lobby.“Is this a hotel?”

One of the men responded, “Yeah, an old Montour.”

“And the humans don’t know you are here?”

He grinned.“Nope.”

Angelina frowned but didn’t say anything else.Since we had arrived, she had locked herself down.I could still feel her apprehension, but that was about all.

One of the elevators opened, but the man with us told Gideon, Lena, and me to wait as part of our group was led onto the arriving car.

“Where are they being taken?”Gideon asked.

“To rooms on the fourth floor.Your rooms are on the seventh.”

None of us said anything, although we did share curious looks.Another elevator car arrived, and more of the group left.I was antsy that we were being separated but didn’t voice my concern.I was pretty sure that Gideon was feeling the same way.

After the third car, the rest of our group was gone, and we were led into the fourth small box.The man put a key into the panel and pressed the seventh floor.Obviously, not everyone was allowed to that floor.I wasn’t sure if that was good or not.

At the top, the man led us down a hallway and stopped at the door halfway down the hall.He unlocked the door with a key fob and pushed it open.He looked at Gideon.“This will be your room, and you two will be across the hall.”

Gideon stepped forward toward the door.“Are we being locked in here?”

He shook his head.“No, after you get a chance to clean up, you can come down to the main floor and get something to eat. We’ll have keys available for you so you can come and go.These are the suites. We only use these for special guests.”

“Portage considers us special?”Angelina asked quickly.

He grinned.“You are to be treated like royalty. His exact words, Ms.Michaels.”

He unlocked the door across the hallway.“If you have any questions, just ring the front desk.Someone can get you anything you need.”

He walked away and left us staring after him.“Anyone else think this is a setup?”Gideon asked.

“Makes me nervous as hell,” I replied.“But I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.I want a shower and food.”
