I shook my head.“Whatever floats your boat.”I turned away from him and ran the brush through my long hair a few times, working out the knots.
“Where is your sister?”
The question was innocent, but I got the impression that he had been sent here to quiz me for information.
“Safe someplace, but I don’t know where.”I turned to give him a direct look.“You can let your buddies know that I do not know where she is, and even if I did, I wouldn’t share that information with them.”
He smirked and got to his feet.“I wasn’t asking for them.”
“Yeah.”I dropped my brush to the bed and began to twist my long hair into a knot.“Then why were you asking?”
“Just curious.”
“Did anyone ever tell you that curiosity killed the cat?”
He chuckled.“Maybe a time or two.”
I studied him as I finished twisting my hair.He was tall, very tall, and his light-green eyes were attentive as he kept them on me, studying every move I made.
I tore my gaze from him and dug into my bag for a hair clip.Once done, I rolled my dirty clothes and went to put them back inside my bag.
“We do have laundry here.”
“Yeah, well, I like to keep my things together.You never know when I might need to take off quickly.”
He smirked.“Yeah, you never know.You might want to be ready at any time.”
I crossed my arms over my chest.“Is that a warning, Corbin?”
He shook his head.“No, more like a suggestion.”
“Why is it that I need that particular suggestion?Do you honestly think that I want to come here and lead your people?I have no interest in that, so you and your buddies can tone it down a notch or two.I am here to rest for a little while, and then I’ll be back out on my own.”
“You sure about that?”
I laughed, and my arms dropped to my sides.“Why in the fuck would you think I would want to come here and lead a group of people that I didn’t even know?”
He shrugged after a moment.“I don’t know, but Gideon seems to think that you are the be-all-end-all to the war.”
“Yeah, well, Gideon must be smoking crack because I’m not involved in this war.I am only trying to survive one day at a time like most of the breed out there.”
