Chapter Three

Kristin

Istood in the control room and watched another news video that we had collected. The report wasn’t good.More of our breed were being killed, and small cells were being hunted and taken down every day.

When we first came here and locked the facility down, I told myself that it was necessary for our survival. We had eight hundred of the breed in here from both the United States and Canada. At first, this had seemed like the right idea. After seeing the carnage on the streets, it tore at a part of me.

Had I made a mistake to come here?Should I have stayed out there and fought? These questions were only two of the fifty that I asked myself daily.I leaned back in my seat and rested my hand on my growing belly.I was over five months pregnant now, and our daughter was growing well.

I wished I could say the same for my relationship with her father. For a week after Angelina left the compound, Hugh had given me the silent treatment. We had only spoken when I told him that I needed to feed the baby.He had given me his wrist, kept himself locked down tightly, and then left me as soon as I finished.

We slept in the same bed, but these days that was the only time we were ever in the same room together.

A few weeks later, he started talking to me about what was going on outside, and more than once, we’d argued over my decision to let Angelina leave. Each time we had that argument, he would get moody and stop talking to me again.I was tired of it.

Angelina was strong and resourceful.I knew that if anyone could take care of themselves, she could. When this was over, we’d probably find her sipping a mai tai and having her nails done with four naked men fawning over her.

As soon as this baby was born, I had every intention of releasing Hugh from our mating. He could leave the moment we unlocked the door for all I cared. The great hope that we would eventually find love had vanished into thin air with the transport that took Angelina away from the mountain.

I sighed as I got to my feet and stretched. As I walked toward the door, I glanced around.Things here had been working like clockwork. All the systems had been running perfectly. We had enough food to feed everyone, both breed and human, and so far, there hadn’t been any significant issues.

The hardest thing for everyone was being stuck inside. If I thought living at the hotel was difficult, living underground was even worse. At least at the hotel, I was able to go up on the roof and see the city. Here, if I did go outside, it was to the small area we had in the side of the mountain, and all I saw was the dense forest.

I longed to see the city again and the people hustling and bustling from work and home.Sometimes, I watched the news to see other people and what else was going on in the world since we were so cut off.

To say that I missed being part of the mainline of humanity was an understatement. What I wouldn’t do to go back to simpler times when I was a cop, driving circles in the darkness and watching over the people living in Fawn Hollow Township.

I waved at Tim, one of our human employees, as I reached the door.I stood in the hallway, unsure where I wanted to go.It was late afternoon, and most people were sleeping, including Hugh.

I closed my eyes and focused on Zander. He was awake. In the five months that we had been here, I’d only seen him three times. It had been a point of contention with Hugh, and even though Hugh didn’t want to be with me, he didn’t want me to be with Zander either—not that I would have.

Hugh had made me promise that I would keep my distance from Zander, and I had done so.The times that I had spoken with him were always business-related.I didn’t have a reason to see him now, except that I was bored out of my skull.I wanted to talk to someone about anything other than the war raging outside our makeshift home.

I made my way up the stairs to the next floor, where Zander’s room was located next to Gabe and Olivia.A guard stood in the hallway, not that they needed guarding, but to show others I took their punishment seriously.I could release the lock on their doors in another month and let them wander the compound.I knew Olivia was ready to get out of her room. She never failed to complain about it when I saw her.

While I had visited Gabe and Olivia a little more often, our relationship was still a bit stilted.Only time would tell if we’d be able to patch things up to have something resembling a friendship.

I keyed in the code for Zander’s door and entered his small apartment. His place had a sitting area, a bathroom, a small kitchenette, and a bedroom.Zander was lying on the couch reading a book, and he sat up when the door opened.

“What are you doing here? It’s the middle of the afternoon.”

“I couldn’t sleep,” I said and paused.“You don’t mind me stopping by, do you?”

“No.Not at all.Is there something I can help you with?”He set the book on the table as I came around the couch.

“No.I’m not here for business.I was bored.”I smiled at him and sank into the opposite corner of the couch.

He grinned at me.“You came to the right place.I can cure your boredom.”

I laughed.“Really? How are you going to do that?”

His eyes darkened for a moment, and I felt the desire begin to swirl around him, but he reined it in and threw his arm along the back of the couch casually as he replied, “I can provide excellent conversation.Read any good books lately?I have a few if you want to read them.”

“Books, huh? That’s how I cure being bored?”

He shrugged a shoulder.“Just a suggestion.My other ones probably wouldn’t be appropriate.”

I chuckled.“I’ll have to keep it in mind.I don’t think I would be able to keep my mind on the story, and you’re right about the other stuff.”
