Chapter 20

The following morning

I woke up in Isaac's old room. I had been staying there since I had been in Seattle. It was mostly a spare bedroom now, but there were a few of Isaac's personal things, like a shelf with some of his basketball memorabilia. There were several old photos of Isaac, and I went over and looked at them on a regular basis when I was in the room alone.

I woke up staring at the shelf because it was on my left.

The sun was up, and I blinked.

It took me a minute to gather my wits and remember where I was.

Today was my last full day in Seattle, and I dreaded tomorrow already. I glanced at the clock because it registered that we were burning daylight hours.

It was 8:28, and I sprang out of the bed.

I was about to go straight to Isaac. I was on a mission, and I almost overlooked it, but my eye barely noticed the piece of paper on my bedside nightstand. It was folded next to my phone, and I knew it hadn't been there when I fell asleep.

I grabbed and opened it.

Ari,

I snuck in here fifteen minutes after we said goodnight, and you are already sound asleep. I was going to talk to you, but I'll write instead. I want to be with you. I want to be close to you at all times. I love you. I want you in my life forever. Please think about a day that we can get make this happen because I don't want to be apart from you anymore.

Isaac

My chest ached to be next to him. Somehow that note made everything so much more real. I was across the entire country from everyone I knew and loved, and yet this felt like home—Seattle was home, and I knew it.

I placed the note in the most private place I could think of, which was under all of the clothes in my suitcase. I didn't take the time to read it twice. I wanted to, but I didn’t. I didn't even take time to brush my teeth. I was in such a hurry to get to Isaac that I jogged across the whole house without stopping.

I could hear someone in the kitchen, but I didn't go that way. I headed straight for the room where Isaac was sleeping. I gave a couple of light taps before I opened the door.

I cracked it at first, but I saw Isaac pick up his head while lying in the bed, and I went inside. I walked over there and climbed into the bed next to him. Isaac kicked a leg partially over me, trapping me in his grasp and covering me with the quilt in the process.

"Good morning. I got your letter," I said, feeling happy and in a great mood.

"You did?"

"Yeah, and we slept all day. It's eight-thirty."

He laughed. It was silent, but I felt his chest shake.

"We didn’t go to bed until three-thirty," he said. "And I didn't go to bed until later than that."

He gave me a squeeze.

"Why, because you had to sneak in my room and write me notes?"

"Did you find it?"

"Yes." I leaned toward him and tried to kiss him but I couldn't reach so he brought me his cheek.

"What did you think?" he asked sleepily.

"About your note? I loved it. I love you, and I love your note."

We snuggled for a minute. I rested my head on his chest, holding onto him. There was a quilt between us, but I got so close to him that I could feel his warmth. He adjusted, bringing his arms around me.

"What are we doing today?" I asked.
