Ask your mate. She’s calling the shots.I laughed as his dismay slipped to me.

I grabbed up some new clothes and changed before moving downstairs to see what I had to feed Brynn. There wasn’t much, but I whipped up a little something.

“Adam!” The terror in Brynn’s voice came as my element registered flames in my bathroom. Within a breath’s time, I’d stifled them and raced up the stairs.

Brynn stood shaking in our bathroom, pointing to a dark spot on the counter. What remained of a small box of facial tissues sat beside the dark mark. On the other side, the faucet glowed red and began to sag.

“Well, I guess you found out what you do.” I pulled her into a tight hug.

She pushed back from me to look into my face. “What I do? Adam, whatdidI do?”

“You heated up the faucet, which lit the box on fire.” I shrugged. “I can only create and extinguish fire as well as make it grow or dissipate. I can’t heat objects up.”

Brynn blinked at me. “Well, I don’t want to. Take it back.”

With a sigh—she’d kill me if I laughed right now—I pulled her back to me. “It doesn’t work like that, baby. You’ll learn to control it, though. Don’t worry about it.”

“Don’t worry? Adam, I nearly burned the house down!” She smacked my arm when I chuckled.

“I was right here the whole time. You wouldn’t have been able to burn it down. I would have stopped it. Trust me, Brynn.” My eyes pleaded with her. “Trust me to protect you. I won’t let you hurt yourself or anyone else. I can’t say some stuff won’t be ruined, but we’ll work through that.”

Brynn relaxed into me. She had to be exhausted after the stress of being a captive and then running for her life.

“I wish I had the time to give you to rest, baby, but we have to make our way to Drew’s cabin before we’re late.” I rubbed her back but couldn’t seem to allow her to leave my hold. “I love you. I won’t allow anything bad to happen to you.”

“I know.”

“Now, finish up and we’ll meet my family.” After kissing her temple, I left her to her business. I didn’t want to, but if I stayed, we’d be late to Drew’s, and Sylee hadn’t been in a good mood. Something about the conversation we were supposed to have with Mom didn’t sit well, though, and I wanted to put it off as long as possible.

Brynn finished up in the bathroom and ate the food I’d made, and then we were out the door. I’d packed her a bag of my clothes since she had nothing with her. She also wore some of my things. They were baggy on her, but I loved the look. At least the clothes weren’t too long.

I didn’t bother knocking on the back door but walked into my brother’s house, hand in hand with my mate. I’d intended to be one of the first there, but everyone had beaten us inside.

While I’d been expecting my siblings to come, I’d been unprepared to find them alone in Drew’s living room. My mother and her own siblings were nowhere to be found. This did not hurt my feelings.

“Where’d they go?” I asked as Brynn and I moved further into the living room to find all my siblings sitting on the ground in front of the couches. This left the spot by the fireplace for Brynn and me.

Taking the cue from my siblings, I sat on the ground and pulled Brynn down beside me. If I could feel her nerves through the link, the others could as well.

“Hi, Brynn.” Jazz gave my mate a tiny wave. “It’s nice to officially meet you when we’re not trying to avoid being killed. I’m Jazz.”

Brynn gave the tiny redhead a small wave back.

“So, Adam.” Grace looked at me with a stern expression. “What can she do?”

“Do you want to show them?” I grinned as Brynn shook her head fast.

“No, no way. Not doing that again.” Her face paled a little. “It was unexpected, but now I know how to stop it.”

Don’t warm things up. Don’t warm things up.Many people smiled as Brynn recited her mantra, unaware she was broadcasting her thoughts to everyone.

We all looked at Sophie, the blonde Dark healer, when she cleared her throat. A small, sweet smile graced her features. “You know, Brynn, when I first learned about my powers, I kinda, sorta, maybe a little, paralyzed Drew with a shock.” Brynn’s mouth popped open. “Then I kinda, sorta, unintentionally zapped Adam, and he flew down a hallway into a heavy wooden door, and he kinda, sorta broke the door from its hinges. It was all pretty nasty.”

Sylee gave a tiny snort. “When I found out I had powers, I was asleep in the bottom of the bathtub. It was full.”

Brynn’s eyebrows rose as Jazz raised her hand. “I knocked Drew from the dining room and into the fireplace with a little hit to the shoulder. I think that’s what I did. Anyway, I didn’t hit him that hard.”

Tessa shrugged. “I got a lot of people killed. Yeah, they were the enemy thank goodness, but yeah, I did a lot of damage.”
