“Enough, Zhaine,” she called when I moved faster than him to avoid the punch. In his anger, Zhaine had packed a power punch but hadn’t planned for me to move. He knew better. His element made him faster than me, but he wasn’t thinking.

“He stopped me from grabbing the child!” Zhaine marched back to his mate and pointed at me like a child while tattling. No, Zhaine wasn’t a child. He was deadlier than one.

Jeff had fixed my nose already, so I wiped at the blood with my sleeve. Brynn’s emotional wall had fallen, and the result was a panic attack about to send me to my knees.

Adam! Adam!

Brynn, stop screaming.I rubbed at my temple. Now that Lord Lightning wasn’t throwing punches, emotions and voices were about to do me in instead.

Everyone quiet! The voices in my head silenced. Not all had been yelling at me, but they’d included me into their group conversation, and right now, I needed my wits about me.

What in the blazes was that?Drew was livid, and to say I was happy I wasn’t Cal was an understatement. On a normal day, keeping Drew in line could be difficult for me. Right now? Poor Cal.

“Lord Adam.” Lady Onyx stepped forward and waved me to the pool. She smiled at my hesitance as I considered Zhaine, who stood off to the side seething and glaring at me. “He won’t harm you.”

“Tell that to my nose and gut. They don’t really believe you.” I took one step and then another as I kept watch on my uncle.

“He misunderstood me before he left.” Zhaine’s head whipped over to look at his mate. “Yes, dear. I said to grab one of the children. You did not wait for me to explain which one.”

“I made to grab a child and he,” Zhaine pointed at me, “got in my way.”

Onyx smiled. “No, mate. You grabbed the correct child.”

My feet stopped, and Zhaine stilled.

Onyx waved me forward again, but I shook my head. No way did I plan to move closer to her until I knew what she wanted.

With a resigned smile and sigh, Onyx sat on the side of her raised pool. “When I said child, I meant a child of the Mindolin. It didn’t matter which one, but Fire is a good choice. Life and Water is struggling with his new powers, no matter what he says. He will for a few days more. His body has settled, but his mind is overwhelmed.

“Earth should protect his children, and as a guardian to them, Lightning should stay as well. Healing and Love along with Air are both recuperating from their attacks by the Mindolin.”

“Our father,” I interrupted.

The seer nodded. “Yes. So, you were the perfect one to bring, Fire. I’m sorry we couldn’t bring your new mate with you. It was safest if we didn’t.”

Cal, you saw this.I stared at Onyx while speaking to my siblings’ links along with the Ladies. One side of Onyx’s lips lifted. She knew what I was doing. How much did she know? How much did Life know, and now Cal?

I saw you throw Taylee to Drew and disappear with Zhaine. While I didn’t want it to happen, it seemed right.Cal sounded confused and not his confident self. His new powers and the failures we’d had along the way were humbling my brother more than anything else ever had.

Adam, are you okay?Brynn’s voice shook. I could see her now, on the couch, separated from my family. She’d feel alone and stranded in a place, in a world, where she knew no one and had no friends.

I’m okay, baby. I’m with Zhaine and Onyx. The others will tell you who they are. Trust my brothers and their mates. They won’t allow anything to happen to you.If they did, they’d face my wrath. They knew that, though. Just as they’d do the same if I allowed one of their women to be hurt.

On our private link, I spoke to Brynn alone.Baby, I don’t know what’s going on, but I need you to be brave and strong for me. My brothers are not the monsters they once were, and their mates are kind. We are all a family. They love you already as much as they love each other. They don’t know you, but they love you and accept you.

Adam, I’m a worthless Neutral who now happens to warm things up.Why did she keep calling herself that? After all the years we’d known each other, I couldn’t make her stop using that word. Her mother had called her worthless. She’d made Brynn feel that way after her dad left. She made Brynn think his leaving was Brynn’s fault. How could I show her how wonderful she was?

You are the most amazing woman I know, baby. Talk to Jazz more. She’ll set you straight. You’ll believe in yourself after only a few minutes. Jazz is Light and still can’t fight, but she can make you feel good about yourself. Sophie is kind and can’t fight either. She’s a healer and was the daughter of the Dark king, LaSalle Decoya. She knows a thing or two about emotional abuse. You’re not alone, Brynn. I’m with you. You can talk to me any time.

Okay. I’m so scared for you.Her voice cracked, and I knew she was crying in Drew’s house. What I wouldn’t give to be there to hold her. Though, if I were there, she wouldn’t be crying. One of the other women would be, though. Zhaine would have taken someone else.

Be strong, Brynn. If I weren’t here, one of my brothers would be. Their mates have been through a lot, watching them be injured and almost die. We can be strong so they don’t have to suffer more.

I’ll try.Her sniffles began to clear up, and I brought myself back to the cavern and Onyx’s Pool.

“She is strong, Adam. She will be okay while you’re gone.” Onyx stood and waved me toward the pool.

This time, I went. “You’re sure about that? You’ve seen it?”
