I’m the one who’s sorry. I’m slowing us down and putting us in danger.I tried to push against him, but his blood hadn’t helped enough to give me that kind of strength. Please, don’t start a fire. It will attract danger. I can’t let these children be hurt because of me. Please.

Adam’s emotions had become so strong, I could feel them through his link. He warred with himself about doing the right thing. Guilt, fear, and anger rolled through him to everyone else.

“She needs to be warm but doesn’t want us to make a fire.” Adam explained as his emotions roared on. “I need to get her warm. We may not need to be mated to defeat the Mindolin after all, but I won’t lose her. I will not lose my wife.”

“Maybe I can help.” I tried to open my eyes to see which female had spoken, but my eyelids were too heavy.

“Aunt Olivia.” Adam’s words sounded relieved.

A smile was on the woman’s face. You could hear it in her words. “Glad to be of service, young Fire Lord.”

Warm, delicate fingers touched my cheek. “Yes, she is quite cool, isn’t she? Well, fear no more. I’ll have her warmed up in no time. Anyone who doesn’t want to be in an oven should go about their business and leave us alone.”

The last sentence was snappy and not how I’d pictured this woman speaking.

Adam laughed. “What bee is in your bonnet, Lady Air?”

Just as he said her title, the air around us began to warm. It was amazing. I wanted more.

“Lightning sent a message to Love and me about Life’s betrayal. I’m a bit perturbed, nephew.” My eyes finally opened to see a small, redheaded woman sitting beside me. Her mouth turned up in a small smile at seeing me improving. “You are quite the beauty, aren’t you?”

“She is,” Adam agreed before I could deny the charge. I was average. That was it. “Did Love come with you?”

Lady Air nodded. “She’s with Jeff and his family. Lilith is quite excited Jeff has a Harbor Witch consort. It might seem weird, but Jeff and Tessa are both her family. Jeff is her nephew and Tessa a very, very distant descendent. She misses her daughters. Tessa is about to find out she is a replacement for them.”

I pushed myself into a sitting position with Adam’s help. The air around us was hot, and my body was soaking it up.

“How long will it take me to become used to my powers and not almost die?” I tried not to really think about that last part. When I could lose my mind, then I would, but right now, that would be bad.

Air shrugged. “I don’t know. Adam was a baby, so of course he was weak and took much longer than you will. I’d ask Life, but as we know, she’s not trustworthy right now and hasn’t been in a long time. I’m with Marcus, I’d have expected this to happen before now.”

“I did spend time in Demon’s Ridge. Then I happened upon a burned-down house with hot coals.” I felt bad for the people who’d lived in the house, and maybe died in the house, but their house fire had saved my life.

“Well,” Air smiled, “that would do it.”

“What about my mom?” Adam changed the subject on us none too gracefully. “Does she know? Is she coming?”

Air’s smile faded. “I don’t know if anyone has told her.”

We sat in silence. The darkness around us made me shiver, and Adam pulled me closer to him. Still, I was amazed at what I could see around me.

When my vision adjusted again, I slapped Adam a few times.

“Hey, hey, what’s going on?” Adam grabbed at my wrist before I could slap him yet again.

“You said I could heat objects up, and I did that.” I gulped. “You didn’t tell me I could see things in the dark.”

“Really? Your vision is that good? I mean, mine is, but none of the Ladies can see well in the dark.” My mate was pleased.

“This is different than that. Air, please destroy our heat bubble for a moment. It’s messing up my sight.” A breath later, the cool air slapped me, and I shivered. “Well, that was rough.”

Around me, red, orange, and yellow people walked around. Everything else was black. And I couldn’t see definition on them.

Two colored dots in the distance made me sit up straight. “Adam, we have company.”

“Where? I don’t see anyone.” I looked at him and found not a man covered in darkness, but a man doused in colors, and I could tell he squinted into the night.

“Adam, I see heat.” He looked at me. “I see heat, and there are two things or people, or whatever, coming our way in that direction.”
