“He seem more out of sorts than usual to you?”

Florence threw him a glare as they walked side by side down the corridor, me on the other side of Apollo.

“Mr Lone Wolf is always out of sorts. Maybe he broke a claw?”

Apollo chuckled. “Yeah. You’re probably right. His dad probably got in touch.”

I didn’t even like Valen, and my blood ran cold at that thought. Cillian Kincaid only ever got into contact with his son for one reason. Those worse higher powers that he’d spoken of on Saturday. It was a major reason to put him in a mood. I didn’t know all the ins and outs of the Kincaid family dealings, but I knew enough to know that someone was probably going to lose their life.

“Harlow?” Apollo tugged my hand and I realised we’d reached Florence and my classroom.

I blinked. “Sorry.”

“She’s not sleeping,” Florence said pointedly.

“Everything okay, sweetheart?” Apollo asked, rubbing my back.

I nodded. “Yeah. Just…you know…last year and all.”

He gave me a warm, encouraging smile. “I get it. Everything’s coming to an end.”

“Don’t put it like that,” Florence snapped, whacking his shoulder.

Apollo grinned cheekily at her. “Well, it is.”

“Yeah, but we don’t want a reminder, idiot.”

“Miss Vanguard. Miss Walsh?” the sister said from the classroom. “I trust you’ll be joining us today?”

“Yes, sister,” I said with a smile. “Sorry, sister.”

“And you have a class to get to yourself, Mr Callahan?”

Apollo gave her one of his charming smiles and any idiot could see she was trying not to soften at the sight of it.

“Of course, sister. I won’t hold you up.”

“Good. And I trust Miss Vanguard will be able to stay awake for more than five minutes?” she asked as Apollo kissed my cheek and squeezed my hand.

Apollo chuckled in my ear. “Be good.”

“You be good,” I replied, knowing that he wouldn’t be.

“Not if I can help it.”

He threw one more charming smile and wave to the sister, then sauntered off. Florence and I hurried quickly to our seats.

For the rest of the day, I could feel Florence burning next to me like a giant flaming question mark. She was itching to know more, especially with us being separated at the end of the day. But she didn’t have a death wish, so she knew she’d have to wait until we were one hundred percent alone with no chance of anyone overhearing us. And that wouldn’t be until the end of the day.

At Lunch, Apollo’s arm was around me, but his attention was on anything but me as he talked with Winchester and Wyatt about nothing I was paying attention to. Valen walked over to the group, and I’d already locked eyes with him by the time Florence elbowed me.

I elbowed her right back. “Subtle,” I muttered.

She shrugged. “What? There was a bee.”

I looked at her in fond exasperation. “A bee?”

She nodded. “Yes. Or maybe it was an elephant. A great big elephant.Greyelephant.”
