“Nothing,” Apollo said. “That’s the problem. The very opposite. Everything’s right with her.”

“All of a sudden?” Valen asked suspiciously.

“All of a sudden.” Apollo’s laugh this time was self-conscious. “I don’t fucking know what I’m doing.”

“What? You’re suddenly in love with her now?”

“I’ve always loved her, Valk.”

“What?” I whispered in time with Valen’s question.

“I’ve just never been in love with her.”

“Until now?”

“Maybe I could be.”

“Fucking…” Valen muttered. “We’re too fucking sober for this conversation. I’ll get drinks. Smokes are on the balcony.”

“You keep them out there?”

“You know how your mum feels about us smoking in the house.”

“Oh,” Apollo teased, his voice getting quieter as he supposedly moved to the balcony. “And you listen to my mum?”

“She lets me sleep on her nice linen,” Valen said, his voice getting louder. “I’m nice to her.”

“Idiot.”

The wardrobe door opened, and I saw Valen wave me out.

“What the fuck?” I asked him as he surreptitiously bundled me out of his door.

“I don’t know,” he answered.

“You guys talk about me a lot?” I accused.

“This is the first time,” Valen answered, looking at me hard.

I looked at his bedroom door like I could see Apollo through it. Apollo who had gone to his best friend to talk about how he felt about me. I didn’t know what or how to feel about that.

“And it will be the last,” Valen added.

I put my hand on his chest to stop him leaving. “We…”

The corner of his lip tipped up. “You want more?”

I opened my mouth and then closed it. I didn’t know what I wanted.

Being near Valen, breathing him in, feeling his tight body under my hand, my clit tingled and I wanted him to finish what he started. Whatever power he had over me, it was stronger than whatever was going on in Apollo’s head right now. That feeling that we needed something from the other was niggling at me annoyingly. I couldn’t shake it.

Valen caressed my cheek and tipped my face to look at him. “I’ll come see you when he’s asleep,” he said softly.

I nodded, then darted away to my room before Apollo could come and see what was taking Valen so long about getting a couple of drinks.

I tried to distract myself with books and games and even showered. But, if Valen came to me later that night, it was after I’d fallen asleep, too exhausted to keep myself awake to wait for him any longer.
