Maeve breathed in deep, her body quaking against his.
“I can’t believe it’s over, that she can’t hurt anyone.” She blinked back tears. “Callie and Lexi….” She gritted her teeth at whatever thought crossed her mind, then she said, “Lexi was the one I was most worried about. She’s only nine, Denise could have done so much damage, simply by hurting Callie—she didn’t even have to directly target Lexi.”
“Yeah, but that bitch did. And she deserves to go to hell for that.”
“I think twenty-five years in a minimum-security federal prison will have to do,” Detective Oliveira drawled as he came to stand beside them, concern for Maeve warming his dark brown eyes.
“Hey man, thanks for coming,” AJ said, his appreciation for the man growing. When they’d been introduced, AJ learned that Camilo Oliveira had just transferred in from LA, where he’d been a homicide detective. Wanting a slower life with less murder, he chose a job where he could capture criminals of the less murder-y variety.
“It was my pleasure, truly,” Camilo said, grinning. Turning to AJ and Maeve, he said, “Come by the station in the morning to give your statements,”
Maeve nodded and AJ gave a chin lift.
“Meet up on Thursday, Anchors, I’ll buy the first round,” Blaze said, offering his hand to the detective.
“You got it.”
AJ, his arm around a still trembling Maeve, led her from the building and toward his car.
“Let’s get out of here. I need to be alone with you,” he murmured against her ear. This time, her trembling was for a different reason. Her blue eyes dilated, her face flushing pink, her perfect lips forming an O.
“Yes, let’s go, please,” she whimpered, sliding her breasts against him. “You confronting Denise…. That was so hot, I think I might come right here.”
He groaned. “Fuck that. That orgasm is mine.”
With a happy cry, Maeve took off, running toward AJ’s truck, which he’d parked on the far side of the lot.
He didn’t hesitate to give chase. He’d follow her no matter where she ran.
