Screw. That.

Just then, the elevator dings and the door slides open. A familiar blonde steps into the hallway. Legs to her throat, shiny tanned skin, plump pink lips. My eyes narrow on her as she approaches. Then she smiles… at Aleck.

Twirling a set of keys around her finger, she stops next to him. “Hey,” she says. Her honey-brown eyes fall on me and her smile widens. “Hi.”

Iknowher. Where do I know her?

Oh my god, the fucking resort! The blonde at the bar with her hands all over Aleck.Rebeccahe said her name was.Only friendshe said they were.

“Uh, hey,” his tone shaky and anxious. “Did you find your phone?”

My eyes widen as the realization hits me that they’re together. He met this woman at the resort when he was with me. When he demanded myeverything. Then he left me there and somehow connected with her in the real world. And now they’re together.

TheplansSondra said he had…

His date…

“Yeah, it slipped between the seat and console. Maybe if you didn’t drive so fast.” She giggles, then hands him his keys.

“I’ll meet you inside, okay?” he says impatiently.

But I can’t stick around. Not for this. Not anymore.

“No need, I was just leaving,” I say over my shoulder as I turn and continue down the hallway.

“No,” Aleck grits. “Inside, Rebecca! I’ll be there in a minute.”

Approaching the elevator, I feel Aleck on my tail. I step inside, then press the door close button as if it would save my life, but Aleck slips into the elevator at the last second.

“Stay away from me,” I warn, stepping to the far corner of the elevator.

“I won’t touch you.” He holds his hands up, then pushes them into his pockets. “Winter, I just want to sit down and talk with you. I have a lot of things I want to tell you. Things I should have told you already.”

“Ha!” I boom. “You know the sickest part of all of this? I actually thought you and I had something different—”

“We did,” he interrupts, taking a step forward. “We hadeverything, Winter.”

“You metherin the bar at the resort.” I point back to the hallway. “Yeah, I remember her, asshole. You called me yours, then you just disappeared.” I throw my arms in the air. “Just tell me one thing, did you screw her at the resort?”

“No! Winter, no, I—”

“Then you show up with her… Are you trying to teach me a damn lesson? Trying to show me how little I meant to you?”

“No. It’s not like that at all. Rebecca is—”

“Just another heart for you to destroy. Another hole for you to use. Pathetically, this entire time, I actually thought you were dealing with your dad’s accident—”

“I was,” he interjects.

But I can’t hear any more of his lies, so I finish my sentence. “Notfuckingthe dumb blonde from the resort.”

Inching closer, I look him dead in the eye, trying my hardest not to let him see my pain. Instead, I wear my hatred for him like a badge of honor.

“I believed you when you said I was yours. I believed you when you said we’d figure it out. I fell for you, and you bailed on me like a fucking coward.” The words felt like lava on my tongue. “My original assessment of you was correct, you’re just a hard-on in an expensive suit. Nothing more, nothing less. You’re hollow, Aleck. You’re hollow and I’m done.”

“Winter, I’ve thought about you every single day—”

The laugh that leaves my mouth scares even me. It wasn’t my voice, wasn’t me at all. So devoid of love and gentleness. It was detestation and resentment, but the finality in it is what scared me the most. It was real and savage. It meant that Aleck and I were done. I would never give this man a piece of my heart, not ever again.
