She was aware of Gavin following them down a short corridor.

“Your bedroom,” Logan said, pointing to the first room, “Connor’s room opposite yours and down here”—he opened a door at what was the end of the corridor the last time she was here—“your studio.”

“Studio? But I told you...”

Logan grabbed her hand and pulled her into the room. “I know. But it’s time for my very talented sister to have her own studio. What do you think?”

Slowly, Brooke turned around, trying to take everything in: The big windows overlooking the mountains would ensure more than enough natural light; two cupboards for all her art supplies; a tiled floor for easy cleaning; and look at all the space—it was double the size of her bedroom. In her mind’s eye, she was already unpacking her art supplies and placing her easel in front of the window just so, to catch the last of the light.

She threw her arms around Logan’s neck, tears running over her face. “It’s perfect. Just perfect.”

Her brother laughed and hugged her as the rest of the party also entered the big room. Gavin was standing slightly to the side, a strange expression on his face. Before she could move toward him, though, his sisters rushed forward.

“You like it?” Charlie wanted to know.

“I love it.” Brooke smiled. “But the extra cost...”

Logan smiled. “It’s our pleasure to give you and Mom the studios you deserve.”

Her mom was crying and laughing at the same time. “Oh, I’m so happy! Not only are you moving to the ranch soon, but we’ll be working near each other again, and I can look forward to another wedding and many more babies now that you and Gavin...”

“Mom!” Brooke groaned. “We’re together, that’s it. Nobody is talking about a wedding and babies.”

“But that would be the next step, surely?”

“Can we please just enjoy the moment?” Brooke smiled, her eyes searching for Gavin.

But he wasn’t around. He’d found a way to keep touching her all throughout the long day; it felt strange not to have him close by. She quickly turned back to the others. What was she thinking? Nothing about her and Gavin was real.

She needed to remember that.

CHAPTER 5

––––––––

The whole reason Brookehadn’t wanted Connor to stay behind on the ranch after dinner was because she didn’t want to be alone with Gavin when he dropped her off. There, she’d finally allowed herself to acknowledge the real reason.
