The moments his lips captured hers, the chaos inside of him subsided. This was where he wanted to be. Here. With her. And yes, he couldn’t make any promises to her—he wasn’t any knight in shining armor—but damn it, right now, he needed her to rescue him.

Her arms snaked around his neck, and she clung to him. Without taking his mouth from hers, he picked her up and staggered up the stairs to her room. Besides the burning desire to become a part of her as soon as possible, there was another feeling he couldn’t quite define, egging him on.

In her room, he let her slide down onto the floor, his hand finding its way to a silky leg underneath the short skirt of her dress.

CHAPTER 11

The constant buzzingsound from his phone finally roused Gavin from a deep sleep. Brooke was sprawled over him, her hair covering his body. Still groggy, he picked up his phone. “What the hell?” There were three missed calls from Charlie and four from Lindsay.

Brooke stirred and opened her eyes. “What time is it?”

“Nearly ten.”

She sat up quickly, combing her hair from her face. “Ten? But it can’t be!”

Grinning, he leaned forward and planted a kiss on her lips. “We haven’t slept much over the last two nights. Let me call one of my sisters and find out what’s the crisis. Can’t be Lindsay’s baby—it’s way too early—so it’s probably another dinner they’re planning.”

Brooke slid off the bed. “I’ll make coffee.”

With his gaze following Brooke as she slipped into shorts and a top before she left the room, he dialed Charlie’s number.

“Gavin, thank goodness you’ve finally answered!” Charlie called out. “You best get yourself over to your house; the neighbors have called several times.”

“Why? Anything wrong?”

“Sarah arrived on your doorstep early this morning.”

Sarah? Who was Sarah?

“Sarah, as in your last girlfriend Sarah?” Charlie said.

“Oh, that Sarah. What is she doing here?”

“Looking for you. Apparently.”
