I tried to sit up, but I couldn’t. I turned my head to the side and saw Prince Maedras asleep in a chair next to me. His gold eyes were closed and his face contorted in a worried frown.

I must have made some noise because he opened his eyes and sat up straight. “Thimsal, you’re awake,” he said.

I tried to speak, but my throat was too dry.

He leaned forward and poured me a glass of water from the pitcher on the table. I gulped it, feeling the cool liquid soothe my throat.

“What happened?” I asked.

“The healers didn’t know. Your body just shut down. We’ve been waiting for you to wake up. The scans showed no sign of damage, but your body just wouldn’t respond. We were thinking we’d lost you.”

I swallowed hard. “How long?”

“One day,” he said.

I sat up slowly, feeling my body protest. “One day?” I repeated.

Seven days?

He nodded. “We were about to give up hope.”

I shook my head. “No, I’m fine,” I said. “I just need some time to

“Yes,” he said. “You’ve been asleep for days. We were losing hope.”

“My food... it tasted different,” I said. “It made me so tired.”

“Poison.” He stood up and started pacing the room. “Someone tried to poison you.”

“Who?” I asked.

“I don’t know.” His eyes turn cold. “But I will find out. And they will pay.”

I shivered. If what the woman in my dream said was true, then I was in more danger than I realized. I had to be careful. I had to be smart.

“What about the wedding?” I asked.

“We have postponed it,” he said. “Indefinitely.”

“But what if that is what they want?” I asked. “What if they are trying to stop the wedding because they are afraid of what it might mean?”

“Your safety is more important to me than anything else,” he said. “I will not put you in danger.”

“Danger is all around us,” I said. “You can’t protect me from everything.”

“You need to be alive,” he said. “That is all that matters to me.”

“Maedras,” I pleaded. “We can’t just hide away. We need to fight back. We need to take a stand.”

He looked at me for a long time, and then he nodded. “You’re right,” he said. “We can’t let them win.”

“So what do we do?” I asked.

He leaned down and grabbed my hands. Gently, he kissed my palms. “I will scourge this city until I find those responsible,” he said. His tone was full of venom, and I knew he would not rest until he had found those responsible. “And then I will make them pay. For everything.”
