LANDRY

Standing at the frontdoor, I watch Kourtney Clark exit the back seat of her gold luxury car. Her red heels click on the stone walkway up to the front door. Her shiny blonde hair slides down her chest, covering much of her form-fitting black top. With her short red skirt, I’d guess she was a high-class call girl if I didn’t know she was a lawyer.

Succotash scents the front door until Kourtney gets close enough. Bolting from the room, the cat does what I wish I could.

“Hello,” I say, stepping back as she enters and sizes me up.

“Please don’t suck. If Nomad’s fallen for another dirty twat, I’m just about done respecting him.”

“I’ll do my best.”

“I heard you were a doormat,” Kourtney replies while handing Blair a five-dollar bill. “Maybe that’s what Nomad needs. Marrying a lying slut sure wasn’t the gold ticket.”

“Okay.”

Kourtney hands Beckett a lollipop before winking at me. “I’ll tell you what, baby factory. Nomad and I go way back. After we have this meeting, I’ll let you know if he’s fooling himself with you. I can read the dumbass better than most people.”

“Thank you,” I say in the same voice I used on Darlie when she’d offer me advice like “wearing more makeup might keep your man from knocking up trailer trash” or “when you frown a lot, I can see why your parents weren’t close to you.”

Kourtney ignores my tone and replies, “You’re very welcome.”

“But what’s with the money?” I ask as Blair eyeballs the cash in her hand.

“I don’t like children,” Kourtney explains as she checks her appearance in the front mirror. “However, I’ve noticed they’re easy to bribe. Money for the big ones. Candy for the little ones.”

“That’s nice of you but don’t pull that move with Beau. He doesn’t want anything from strangers.”

“How old is he?”

“Four.”

Kourtney taps her jaw. “That’s a borderline age. Candy or cash?”

“Nothing will be fine.”

“Doesn’t seem fair.”

“Candy?” Brooklyn asks, hurrying over once she notices the lollipop in her brother’s hand.

“Here you go,” Kourtney says as her bright red lips flash a smile.

Brooklyn takes the lollipop and smiles at me. “I got candy.”

Admiring her grin, I think about why Kourtney is here. “Let’s go sit down in the family room.”

Silas appears from the back hallway and slides his gaze over Kourtney before focusing on me.
