Sirens sound outside the bar along with screeching tires and slamming doors. I didn’t even call the police. In all of that chaos, I forgot to call. Adam and Rhys must have noticed me gone. That’s really the only thing I can think of.

They’re going to be so mad at me when they find out what I did. Whether it was right or wrong doesn’t matter when it breaks the foundation of trust. Hudson will be extra pissed, if he ever wakes up from his coma.

Detective Mercer bursts through the front door of the bar, wearing all black swat style gear. He stops, looking from me to Kevin and back to me to asses the situation. It’s kind of funny how it looks, me covered in his blood. I chuckle at how the tables at least look like they were turned.

Laughing right now is inappropriate, but honestly, what’s appropriate after you just killed a man then tried to stop him from dying only to give in to his wish and let him die?

The room is spinning. That can’t be good.

“Alayna, are you alright?” he asks gently, sheathing his gun and holding a hand up to signal the others to stop.

“It’s all his,” I say numbly, staring down at the blood covering both of us. “All this blood. He threatened my life. He tried to shoot me but he missed.”

“I need paramedics,” Detective Mercer says into his ear piece then slowly moves towards me. “The paramedics will be here soon. Does anything hurt?”

“What? No.” Shaking my head back and forth to clear the fuzziness, I look at him again. “He got shot, not me. I didn’t want to shoot him. I wanted him to get help, but he refused. Why did he refuse?”

Detective Mercer squats down in front of me, placing a heavy wool blanket around my shoulders just like the officer did the night we were taken from the Jennings house.

“It’s going to be okay, Alayna. You’re in shock, but the paramedics just pulled in and they’ll help you feel better. You did what you needed to do to survive,” he explains to me as if I’m a child again. “You did good, Alayna.”

The paramedics move in, replacing the detective and ushering me onto a stretcher. They hook me up to what feels like a million machines before rolling me out of the bar. Looking back at Kevin, I close my eyes and send up a wish that he finds the peace and quiet he was searching for.

Adam and Rhys are standing outside when we come out, waiting for me. They jump towards the stretcher, checking me over much like the paramedics just did.

“Fucking hell, Lay. Please tell me that’s not yours,” Adam cries out, checking the blood all over me.

“Not mine,” I say in a sleepy voice. “He tried to kill me then he wanted the peace.”

“What does that mean?” Adam asks Rhys who’s staring at me with tears streaming down his face.

“She’s in shock,” Rhys responds, with a sweet smile that makes me want to hold him close to me. “We’re going to follow you to the hospital, love. Let the paramedics do their job so you can feel better soon. Okay?”

“Okay,” I whisper, my head lulling from side to side. The paramedics thank Rhys and load me into the back of the ambulance. All I want to do now is sleep, but the light that keeps being flashed in my eyes is keeping me awake.

Maybe once I’m at the hospital my mind won’t feel so disoriented. I’m struggling to think. Too much static.

I need sleep.

Chapter Twenty-Four

Alayna

It’sbeenaweeksince everything happened with Kevin at the bar. The images of the day still haunt me in both the day and the nights. I can't shake the feeling of pity I get whenever I think about him now. What a fucking change in mindset in such a short time.

It's why, even against my better judgment, I paid for a small service and plot for Kevin. He was let down so many times in life, I couldn't let him down in death as well. Maybe that makes crazy, but I think it just makes me human.

Slimming the simple black dress down over my hips, I deem myself good enough to head out to the simple, graveside service. My hope is that once he's laid to rest, the memory of that day will also be laid to rest.

Heading out to the living room, I smile at my sweet babies, sleeping peacefully in the arms of their fathers. Never have two children been so doted on in all the history of the world. Between myself, Rhys, Adam, and the ever revolving parade of loved ones through the house since they came home three days ago, they never know a minute of loneliness.

"Where are you going?" Rhys asks, his eyes tracking my black outfit with confusion.

"You know where I'm going," I throw back, placing my hands on my hips to let him know I'm not backing down. "I'm going to the graveside service for Kevin."

"What the fuck, Lay? Why would you go? He tried to kill you more than once and put Riggs in the hospital," Adam bursts out, waking Avery in his arms. Cursing under his breath he sways her back and forth, glaring daggers at me, but keeps his mouth shut.
