I don’t give a damn about the history ofDSC.

I give a damn about the history of me. Of my family.

And I know a little bit more about myself.

I’m definitely notJaci Ruby.

I’mJaci Ryl…

I still need the rest of my name.

Then I need a plan to stay alive.

Chapter 41

“I’m mad at myself for this,” I say to Maz.

Birdie sits in a chair, curled up like a cat wearing glasses.

She’s doing something with a notebook and pen.

“Mad?” Maz asks.

“Look at me,” I say. “I’m not like this. I’m not afraid of anything. Archer got into my head.”

“And your panties,” Birdie says.

“Shut up,” I say.

“Why don’t you ask yourself a more honest question,” Maz says.

“Like?”

“Do you even want to know who you are?”

“Of course I do.”

“Are you sure, Jaci?”

Now I’m getting pissed at Maz.

She must sense it.

She carefully reaches for me and touches my arm.

“You have all the attention on you,” Maz says. “You have two powerful, hot guys after you. You have the thrill of one guy wanting to kill you yet he wants to touch you. He wants to fuck you. Then you have another guy who wants to protect you. And this all is based around your last name. It’s really sexy.”

“It’s dangerous,” I whisper.

“Hence the reason it’s so sexy.”

I pull away from Maz. “No. I want to know who I am. I can’t go back to Fay’s house ever again. I can’t stay here and not figure things out. I can’t live here forever, right? Eventually we all have to leave and live our lives. And how does that work? We’re all part of different families. Does that mean we all hate each other?”

“The Golda and Beryl families get along,” Birdie says, referring to her family and Maz’s.

“I’ve known Birdie for a long time,” Maz says. “It’s not always about wars.”

I let out a long sigh.
