My body… has power…

“I keep thinking about the night you were at my club.”

“You mean the night Cullen invited me to see the band signed to his label?”

Now I’m taking cheap shots and the knife isn’t scaring me so much.

“I told you that night I couldn’t hear you.”

“It happens,” I say. “Everyone else enjoyed the show.”

“They did,” Archer says. “That was a good night. You know, maybe I’ll hear you sing again.”

Archer nods to the guitar case in the golf cart.

“Maybe,” I say. “I don’t have much time, right? I guess I should tell you something, Archer. I know part of my last name.”

“What?” he growls.

“I know my last name starts withRyl,” I say.

His nostrils flare.

“Don’t worry, Archer. I don’t know anything else besides that.”

“You’re interesting, sweet thing,” he says. “That’s the only reason you’re alive.”

“Interesting?”

“Yes. To see where you came from. That you’re here now. And you really don’t know anything else. The story is fascinating. Speaking of that, did you tellhimabout what happened? That I saved you?”

“Is that what this is?” I ask. “Are you looking for credit, Archer? Should I take my pants and panties off right now? Give myself to you? Take me, Archer. You’re my hero.”

Archer presses the knife harder against my jaw.

There’s a sharp pain and I suck in my breath.

Ouch.

“I’m not here to play fucking games,” Archer says. “Don’t get lost in this place, Jaci. Don’t get lost in playing guitar on stage. Or the Halloween party. Don’t get comfortable at all. There’s an ending here. I control that ending.”

“So you’ve said many times, Archer,” I say. “Maybe you should just forget about that wholehonorthing and just tell me everything. Tell me who my family really is. Tell me about my uncle killing your uncle. Go ahead. Tell me everything. I’m ready. Then you can kill me.”

“You make it sound so easy,” Archer says. “That’s what makes you interesting. I’m not sure if you’re afraid or not. But you were afraid when that gun was pointed at you.”

I swallow hard. “So, what, you think you know something more about me now?”

“What would have happened, sweet thing?”

“I don’t know. I try not to live in hypothetical situations.”

“Isn’t that what our relationship is?”

“We have a relationship now?” I whisper.

“The tip of my tongue tingles at the thought of your clit,” Archer says.

My knees start to shake.
