Not even that one person I thought I was in love with.

“What’s my last name, Cullen?” I ask.

“You tell me, love,” he says.

“My last name is Ruby. That’s what I was told my entire life.”

“That’s not true though.”

“I don’t get it,” I say. “The woman who raised me. Her name is Fay Ione. Do you know that name?”

“No, I don’t know that name.”

“So, what, did Fay just make up a name for me? Is my first name really Jaci? Or Jacine? Is any of this real? Am I dreaming? This is a dream, right? Like a really long dream. There’s no way this is real. You can’t be real, Cullen. And all this crap happening? No. Archer’s not real either. He doesn’t want to kill me. Look at me. What does killing me do for anyone, right? I’m not worth a thing. I’m completely and totally-”

Cullen suddenly has his lips against mine.

A kiss I never see coming.

A kiss I never realize how much I need.

Electric pulses soar through my body.

Head to toe in a split second.

A tingling sensation inches up and down my spine.

Every tiny, microscopic hair on my body stands tall.

And between my legs?

Forget about it.

His lips are against mine longer than a second.

Longer than two seconds.

We round three seconds… four seconds…

Cullen pulls his lips from mine.

I almost want to bite at him to beg him to stay there.

“How was that?” he asks. “Real enough for you?”

I feel letters bouncing around in my head, wanting to turn into words so I can speak to him.

I know my face is bright red.

I can’t control that.

Cullen is the hottest guy that’s ever kissed me.

He touches my left cheek. “We’ll talk later, okay? Don’t worry, love, I’ll protect you. I’ll make it my job to protect you.”

Cullen takes out a cellphone and turns away from me.

A split second later, he’s on the move, texting someone.
