I quickly push the hat up as he laughs at me.

I turn and hurry away.

The snowfall never gets any faster.

It doesn’t even stick to the ground.

The leaves on the ground catch some of it, like tiny bowls.

I hurry back toMakson Ridge.

I just want to get some sleep.

Tomorrow I can figure out what to do with my feelings I now have for three different guys.

Chapter 17

Isleep alone.

But I know I’m not alone at all.

The first thing I do when I wake up is hurry out of bed and rush to the window.

I have that excited feeling, wanting to see everything outside coated with snow.

But there’s no snow.

Whatever fell last night on my walk back toMakson Ridgewas all that fell.

The leaves look crisp. Close to being frozen.

I open the window and feel the quick rush of icy air.

I shut the window, then walk to the bathroom to go pee and to fix my hair a little before going downstairs.

I hear the sound of someone singing. I step into the kitchen to find Laz in his cooking apron, mixing up a large bowl of eggs.

“There she is,” Laz says. “It’s nice to see you here again in the morning, Jaci.”

“It’s nice to see you to, Laz,” I say.

“Scrambled eggs fine?”

“Oh, I’m not… I’m going to go back to theThorns.”

“Not without eating,” Laz says.

“Sorry. I’m on my way out. Do you know where Cullen is?”

“Front porch,” Laz says. “With Archer.”

“Are they being civil?”

“TwoHeirsto mafia families who are forever at war?” Laz asks.

“Right, “I say. “There is no peace there.”

“Then again, when it involves you, they have something in common, right?”
