I can see it in his eyes he knows what happened to me.

But he won’t speak of it.

And he knows I won’t speak of it either.

It’s all part of this place. Part of our lives.

I’m a mafiaHeirand that’s just it.

My job here is to study and get a better sense of how the world works so I can find a way to corrupt it. Or stretch the rules and laws.

“What happens if I fail?” I ask.

“What do you think happens, Jacine?”

“I think you’ll be forced to call family,” I say. “My family. My father? My mother? Someone?”

“Is that why you’ve slacked off?” Dean Tahg asks. “Is this on purpose?”

“No.”

He folds his hands and swallows hard. “Jacine, I must be very honest with you. This is not a game to discover some personal information about yourself. That’s not my job. If you don’t want to be here, then I would advise you to pack a bag and leave.”

“And go where?” I ask. “What happens to me then?”

“Once you’re off this property and no longer a student, it’s not my concern,” he says.

In other words, if I leave, I’m a fucking target with no help.

It also means forget figuring out who my family is and who I really am.

“Look, I can make up the work,” I say. “This is all new for me. I’m not used to this. I had no aspirations to go to college. And suddenly I’m thrown into this.”

“My father used to say,‘Excuses are like fingers, everyone has a few or ten…’”

“What about someone born without hands?” I ask.

That makes Dean Tahg chuckle. “I wanted to see you personally. I told Professor Mordec to send you my way. Don’t take this out on him. I will speak to him personally and make sure all missed work is emailed to you. You must commit to studying harder than ever, Jacine.”

Sure thing. I’ll just forget about being kidnapped. I’ll just forget about my feelings for three different guys. I’ll just forget about the way Cullen’s tongue tastes and the way Archer’s tongue feels as it wraps around my nipple and the way Seth’s smile is such an evil curse…

“Of course,” I say.

Dean Tahg stands up.

I quickly stand up.

“I won’t let you down,” I say for some reason.

“I don’t care,” he says. “Don’t let yourself down. You have a lot more to lose here than I do, Jacine.”

Now that comment hits deep.

I hurry to get out of that main office.

I need to smell the crisp autumn air.

I need to go somewhere and think.
