Which made it all too easy for me to dump my troubles on him.

Losing my job, being dumped…all in one day. The whole story.

In my vulnerable state, I did something I would normally never do.

I jumped his bones so fast that he barely knew what hit him.

We had fun together, but…

I told myself it would never happen again.

Four weeks later…a routine check-up with my gyno reveals that I’m pregnant.

Right around the time, Luca takes to working on his bikes, shirtless, in his front yard,

With all of those glorious, sweaty, tattooed on full display to tempt me…

To remind me how good it felt with him the first time.

I can’t go down that road again.

Especially not now. I’m pregnant.

But since Iamhaving the worst few months of my life…

Surely no one can blame me for indulging in him just a little more.

If we keep it casual, he doesn’t need to know I’m pregnant, right?

I’m stuck between a secret baby and a secret fling that no one was supposed to know about, and neither of them are secrets I can keep forever.

Jo

My heart was pounding like a drum as I walked into my house. I stepped inside, turned the lock, and pressed my back against the door, bracing myself.

“It’s okay, Jo. Don’t panic,” I whispered to myself through shaky breaths.

I looked around the bright and colorful rental home I moved into three months earlier. As soon as I signed the lease, I got busy decorating the place in my signature pops of colors and artsy style. The pastel pinks and greens, lush velvet pillows, big potted plants, and screen printed posters on the wall made my heart sing every time I looked at them. This was my safe space. The big nasty world outside and all the horrible events of my day couldn’t hurt me when I was at home.

Unless, of course, I couldn’t afford to keep paying my rent.

I jumped at the sound of my phone ringing suddenly in my purse, but I was relieved by the distraction. The last thing I wanted to do was break down into tears over the horrible day I had. A phone call would be just the trick to pull me out of that hole.

That felt even more true as I looked at the screen and saw Henry’s name scrolling across it. I answered right away.

“I’m so glad you called,” I fired off immediately, sounding more than just a little anxious. “And with perfect timing too.”

“Oh yeah? Why’s that?” he asked.

“You’re coming over tonight, right? I really need you to come hug me and tell me everything is going to be okay. I can tell you all about it then.”

He hesitated for a moment. “Yeah, that’s actually why I was calling. I need to talk to you about something, so coming over tonight…sounds good. But…are you alright?”

I let out a heavy sigh, dreading even saying the words out loud. Then the whole disaster would officially be real. But I couldn’t avoid it forever.
