“Hi,” she replied, her green eyes rimmed red, as if she’d been crying.

"Where is your agent?" I asked, and the woman looked down the hall.

“He helped me pick a home and told me to sit here while he got the keys and all the documents finalized." She sighed. "I was at home cooking dinner because my daughter and grandson were visiting. Then I woke up here."

Whatever she’d died of, it must’ve been something sudden—maybe a heart attack or something.

"Were you told what this place is?" I asked, and her mouth curved downwards as she nodded, her eyes growing teary. “And were you told what happened?”

“I died,” she said, and I nodded as she tried to smile through the pain in her eyes. “I was a pagan. I practiced herbal magic on Earth, but I now understand that real witches do exist."

"Yes, but not being born a witch doesn't mean you're not a real one. Trueborn witches possess power, but humans can do the basics, and herbal magic is a valuable skill. You were granted entry to the God Realm because you deserved it.”

She listened as I explained the realm to her and the different cities. I told her there were other humans here, but she was more intrigued about the various supernatural species she’d find here. And she’d been delighted to discover that I was a werewolf.

She hadn’t been afraid when I showed her my claws and eyes. Instead, the sadness I’d seen in her eyes before began to fade and was replaced by curiosity and excitement. She had already been given her bracelet, so I showed her how to use it, and she caught on quickly. In fact, I think she even surprised herself. She joked about not being able to use the 'fancy' phones on earth, but this high-tech bracelet put it to shame.

“I left my daughter and grandson behind,” she said after some time, her voice trembling. “Will I ever see them again?”

“You reached the end of your journey on Earth, and your daughter and grandson have to continue on theirs. I'm sure they believe you're in a better place, and you are. Life is eternal here, as long as you stay away from the animals I told you about. So when their journey ends, you might meet them here again.”

“Might,” she repeated. “That’s if they earn a place here as well.” She frowned slightly, then her face cleared. “They’re both very good people, so I have no doubt I’ll see them again. Thank you,” she said, squeezing my hand. “Thank you so much.”

A human male returned and thanked me for my help. It wasn’t until I was on my way home that I realized I hadn't gotten the lady's name. Nonetheless, I’d left the facility in high spirits, thankful that I’d already managed to help a frightened new soul.

Now I just needed to give everyone the good news. I’d found my soul purpose. And from the looks of it, I was going to be very good at it.

Iteleported home, and the moment I got there, I pumped my hands in the air excitedly, yelling with triumph. I tapped at my bracelet and sent a message to Rehema that we’d be celebrating tonight, then realized that I hadn’t spoken to Rumir or Lucian all day.

I hadn’t told either of them about the interview because I’d wanted it to be a surprise. Lucian knew it was going to happen, but I hadn’t told him I’d been called in for the interview, so he was unaware it was today.

I called Rumir, but there was no answer. That was strange. When I called again and there was still no answer, I sent him a message asking him to call me soon because I had important news.

Then I called Lucian. But he didn't answer either. When I called him a second and a third time and there was still no answer, I started to get concerned. Our bracelets, which were also our phones, were literally on our bodies all the time.

Where was everyone?

I took a shower intending to teleport to Lucian's house afterward, but before I could do that, my doorbell rang.

I inhaled and then again, but the scent wasn't one I recognized, other than it belonged to a witch. I made my way downstairs and opened the door to find a woman wearing fur from head to toe. She smiled upon seeing me and removed her hood.

“Hi, are you Natalie Blackwood, Lucian Wolfborn’s mate?”

“I am, yes,” I answered. “And you are? How may I help you?”

“I’m Grete. I’m from Esavale, and I'm sorry it took this long for me to reach out to you. I was touring the outland villages and wasn't available when Lucian tried to contact me about the decision that was made about your mate bond." She opened her coat and removed a book wrapped in snow-white fur. "I do have a spell that can lessen the pain of a severed bond; however, I must be honest, it will still be felt.”

I went still, shocked to the core, and it took a moment for Grete to notice. The second she realized I had no idea what she was talking about, she took a step back.

“Oh dear,” she said under her breath, slipping her book back into her coat. “Um, I-I think it’s best if I go. I’m terribly sorry.”

She hurried down the steps, and I watched her go until she teleported. Even after she'd gone, I remained at the door, my pulse thudding loudly in my ears. But nothing was as loud as my wolf's heartbroken howling.

I fell to the ground, my hold on the door tightening until it broke. It felt like the world was caving in on me.
