Page 2 of Wolf Burdened

I couldn’t believe it had come to this. So far, the gods had insisted on keeping the knowledge of this virus a secret, reassuring those who had witnessed episodes like this one that the issue was being handled.

Well, the gods weren't handling it well enough!

The wolf’s mouth opened, and a red mist escaped. I pulled back, falling off her to avoid touching it, and she used that opportunity to jump to her feet and slam me into the wall. I shuddered at the sound of the concrete cracking behind me. Her claws dug into my side while mine went through her chest to puncture her heart.

I gasped when she went still and silent. I tried to remove my hand from her chest, but she grabbed my arm, pushing my hand deeper. For a second, I saw relief in her eyes, and as I tried to withdraw my hand again, she released me.

But it was too late. Her heart had gone silent, and she fell to the ground, dead.

I couldn’t move or look away from her body. My pulse was racing, the pounding filling my ears.

What had I done?

My chest tightened. I'd just taken the life of a fellow werewolf.

Then I glanced back at the human lying on the ground a few steps away, her throat ripped out. All this blood, this death . . . images of the war with the vampires back on Earth flashed before me.

What the hell? This wasn’t what the God Realm was supposed to be like. Why was this happening?

When I lifted my blood-covered hand, a red substance danced around my fingers. It was like a liquid and a mist all at once, and my heart leaped.

Suddenly, it attacked me, swiftly engulfing my arm. I slapped at it frantically, trying to get it off me, but it burrowed into my skin, slipping through my fingers when I tried to grab it.

"Get off me!" I screamed, but within seconds it was gone, vanishing beneath my skin.

My heart thudded once, then stopped, and I fell to my knees as a crimson fog appeared, covering everything.

My vision came swiftly and without warning, and my heart started to beat again, like drums echoing around me. The building and everything vanished, engulfed by the thick fog. When it cleared, I knelt in a wasteland alone, with nothing but barren land, as far as the eye could see.

The world around me was red, the air toxic and suffocating.

My head fell back, and above me, the same fog, thick and misty, was blocking out the sky, moving by like a cloud. No, it was the sky. But it stopped drifting and dove towards me, just as it had attacked me a moment ago, and I screamed.

Hands grabbed at me, and when my eyes cleared, the vision had ended. Instead, I saw someone standing in front of me, his face covered by a black mask. I rose to my feet eyeing the man, who stood up as well.

A black hood hung low over his face, casting shadows on the mask beneath it. I took stock of what was happening around me—there was a swirling portal to my left, and the bodies of the human and werewolf were being carried away by others wearing masks.

“W-Who are you?” I asked, my voice cracking. “The werewolf attacked the human. I-I couldn’t stop her. She's sick with whatever has been infecting the local wildlife.”

A bitter taste filled my mouth, and my chest felt heavy as if something was bearing down on me. Whatever that thing was that entered my body, I could feel it moving around inside me.

Blinking rapidly, I tried to focus on the men who were carrying the bodies as well as the man standing beside me. I’d never seen anyone like them before in this realm, and they gave me the creeps. I frowned.

They all wore black coats that stopped at their knees with hoods that hid their faces. Only one had his hood down, his black hair like a shadow to the base of his neck.

While he had a cloth wrapped around his waist to sheathe two swords, another had a black and gold bow strapped to his back. The rest were without weapons. One had black bracelets on his arms from his wrist to his elbow, and with the long gloves they wore, I couldn't see even the skin on their fingers.

The four carrying the bodies vanished into the portal.

They didn't seem hostile, but I had no idea who or what they were. Their scent was unfamiliar. And so far, not one of them had said a word.

"Who are you?" I asked again, but my question was met by silence.

"Hey!" I heard a familiar voice, and I turned in the direction it had come from, as did the man standing before me.

Rumir, my mate, stood there, looking first at the man in black and then at me. My second mate, Lucian, appeared beside him, followed by my friends Rehema and Brian. They all froze, no doubt trying to understand what they were seeing.

I wish I could have told them. But I didn’t have a clue about what had just happened.
