He smiled weakly, with relief it seemed, then nodded. He reached out a hand as if to rest it on my shoulder but stopped. But before he could pull away, I took it and put it there myself.

He took a breath, and his eyes grew damp.

I could tell he had a great love for Tedara and carried heavy remorse for not standing by her side. I was the closest he’d been to her in a long time.

A building to our right fell, crashing to the ground, and Hydum moved to stand in front of us, putting himself between us and the glass, dust, and chunks of the building that were flying our way. He held his hands out, and a simmering blue shield appeared, protecting us from getting caught in the onslaught of debris.

“Go!” he yelled over his shoulder. “Get out of the city! We will meet again, Natalie!”

Gritting my teeth, I allowed Lucian to pull me away, leaving Hydum behind. I turned and ran, and Rehema fired an arrow at an infected witch bearing down on a woman and child. It looked like the same woman and child we’d seen on the surface.

The witch fell to the ground, the arrow through her heart, and for a second, Rehema froze.

The woman and child got up and ran, but Rehema didn’t move.

It was clear, this was the first time she’d ever taken a life.

Lucian went over and took her by the shoulders. “You saved them,” he said to Rehema, whose eyes were as wide as saucers. “That woman and her child? You saved them. And you freed that witch from sullying her soul further by killing them. I'm sorry, but we have to keep moving."

Rehema continued to look at the witch lying on the ground, and I went over to her. “We have to move, Rehema," I whispered.

Finally, she turned away and continued walking without us. I looked at Lucian and then Rumir before we moved to join her, hurrying through the anarchy occurring in the streets. This was Earth all over again, I thought, seeing souls falling all over each other, trying and failing to get away from the infected.

Men and women, witches, fae, and other supernatural creatures, all with red eyes, chased and tackled those trying to get away.

It was horrifying to watch. My heart bled at the carnage, and the chaos in my own veins stirred.

Who was behind this? Who in this beautiful realm would try to destroy everyone’s peace like this?

We made a sharp right when we saw a fallen building blocking the way ahead of us.

We passed a goddess with short red hair fighting an infected witch. She absorbed the fire sent from the witch and released it as blue flames. It ate at the witch's flesh, and within seconds, the witch was dead. But the goddess was then immediately attacked by another.

"Why?" I spoke aloud, although I hadn't meant to.

Why was this happening? My palms began to throb, and when I looked down, red veins pulsated under my skin. Thankfully, my suit was still black—which meant I was still somewhat stable—when I ran with the others, trying to find a way back to the bridge.

But it was taking all I had to keep it together. This bloodshed had to end, and soon.

The screams were driving me mad.

My divinity urged me to let go and allow my powers to do what I couldn't. I was only an Enchanted, after all—skilled enough in hand-to-hand combat, but I didn't have a bow and arrow like Rehema, I didn't have Rumir’s wings or even Lucian’s telekinetic abilities.

All I could do was run.

But this new power of mine given to me by Tedara was something I could use, something I could claim as mine, if only I let it take over.

I ducked when a hover car fell from above and crashed behind us.

With a wave of his hand, Lucian sent a blast of frost in the direction of the sleek black car, covering it in ice before it could explode. But when we looked up, several more were falling from the sky.

We started running again, with Lucian sending shots of ice towards the cars, freezing them before they could fall and explode.

“Watch out!” Rumir roared.

He pushed Rehema and me out of the way and was slapped by a hover car that had been thrown at us. He was knocked back into a building, trapped between it and the car.

“Rumir!” I screamed, running to him. But before I could get to him, he’d shoved the car away.
