Rumir’s wings uncurled from where they had wrapped around his body like a shield, and he stepped out of the hole he’d created in the wall.

“Ouch,” he growled and turned to face the minotaur that had thrown the hovercar—a half-bull, half-man supernatural.

The minotaur was massive, slightly bigger than Rumir, with a much bulkier body. His bare chest was wrapped in strips of black leather, and he carried an ax that could cut me in half with one swing.

The blade was already drenched in blood, and my stomach turned. How many had this creature killed already?

The whispers started again, and the veins in my temples throbbed. I gritted my teeth, trying to ignore them. This wasn't the best time for me to be distracted.

“Go,” Rumir said as he pulled a sword from his back.

It had been some time since I'd seen him do that. It still looked painful to me. However, I shook my head, and the whispers grew louder.

“No,” I said to him. “We’re not leaving you.”

"I'll catch up, Natalie, go!" he yelled before turning to Lucian. “Take her!”

“No!” I growled at Lucian, my voice contorted.

Behind us, the minotaur huffed.

I shook my head and was losing my grip on my control when another minotaur appeared, a smaller female who was still twice my size.

She was wearing a strip of black leather around her waist like a skirt and around her chest to cover her breasts. Her mane of tangled black hair fell down her back, and her eyes were deep brown, showing she wasn’t infected.

When she charged at the male minotaur, he swung his ax, and she ducked and fell to the ground. My breath stopped when the minotaur’s ax found a home in someone else, and even Rumir lowered his sword in shock.

Behind the female minotaur, a young human had been running by.

My hands shook, and bile rose to my throat when I saw that the ax had sliced right through the girl. Blood spilled down the side of her mouth, and her eyes were wide with disbelief.

My entire body began to tremble. “No,” I said under my breath. “No!”

I acted without thinking. I raised a hand and envisioned my hands wrapped around the minotaur's neck. His head spun, breaking, and I flicked my hand, sending him crashing into a building.

His ax fell along with the human still attached to it, her lifeless eyes still wide open.

Then the female minotaur began to scream. The sound was the most awful thing I’d ever heard as she fell to her knees. Tears streamed down her cheeks.

“Brother!” she screamed. “Brother!”

My body went cold, realizing the dead minotaur was her sibling.

“What have I done?” I whispered and took a step back. She turned to look at me, and her expression filled with horror, which told me my eyes had turned red. "I'm sorry," I murmured, my voice still that of a thousand voices compressed.

My vision started to blur, and I could feel the last ounce of my control slipping. This wasn't right. None of this was right. First, Rehema had been forced to take a life, then a woman had to watch her brother die—by my hand! None of this was right.

And that poor little girl… She’d just been slaughtered, her soul lost forever.

“Her suit,” I heard Rehema say. “It’s turning white.”

I clutched at my chest as several explosions went off elsewhere in the city, and I growled. My suit was quickly changing from black to white when suddenly, a shock of something like electricity sent me to my knees.

For a second, I felt calm, but my rage resurfaced almost immediately. I felt another shock, and I groaned, leaning forward.

In my peripheral vision, I saw Rumir rushing towards me. But with a flick of my hand, I sent him staggering away from me.

I grabbed at my arm, pinning it to my chest as my eyes welled up with tears.
