Page 9 of Wolf Burdened

Rumir went to follow her, but Rehema stopped him, telling him to give Natalie time to clean up. I agreed with Rehema, even though I wanted to race up those stairs after her, too.

I could see how disoriented she was. Even though I wanted to know what had happened, her being okay was far more important.

We’d only just gotten over one hurdle where Rumir and I were concerned. We’d come to an uneasy understanding that we'd both try to be there for her, to be mates to her, and to put the dislike between us to the side rather than both of us losing her.

A she-wolf having two male mates was almost unheard of. It had only happened once before on Earth, and now it had happened again. To make things even more complicated, Rumir was half dragon—an entirely different species. My relationship with Rumir had been strained long before Natalie arrived, but her presence in our lives—or mine at least, since I couldn’t speak for Rumir—had changed so much.

A hole in my chest had been filled the moment I’d caught her scent.

And seeing her like this… Well, someone was going to pay.

“What did you learn?” I growled at Rumir, who shook his head.

“Nothing yet. The Imperium refused to see me,” he answered. “I would’ve stayed to force the issue, but then they told me Natalie had been teleported home. That's why I came back. Tonight, all that’s important is that she’s okay. But tomorrow, I’m going to find out what the hell’s going on. The Imperium can’t avoid me forever. And they won’t like what they get if they leave me waiting too long.”

He looked towards the door, his pupils turning vertical like those of a dragon. “The gods have had enough time to solve this. And because of their inaction, my mate—our mate—has been hurt. Someone's going to bleed for this, just as she has!"

He had a point even if I usually disagreed with him, I could not deny that I felt the same way. I just wasn't going to tell him that.

"You can smell it, can't you?" I said. Brian and Rehema nodded.

Green and gold scales appeared under Rumir’s eyes for a second before they vanished. “I smell it,” he growled. “The blood on Natalie is from an infected soul. If she was attacked by one of them, if the virus can now be transferred from animals to souls, everyone in this realm is in serious danger.”
