NATALIE

At my command, Luna flew over to me, her white body standing out against the dark sky. She hovered over me, attacking any infected that got close, raining down chaos like a furious beast. Lucian and Brian were occupied, and so were the Goddess and Zeus, so I took the opportunity to do what I had planned.

I wasn't sure if this was going to work, but I hoped it would. In the past, I'd managed to pull the chaos out of souls, so why not do the same to the virus itself, removing its key ingredient? I'd pull the chaos out of the virus and consume it all, or rather, Luna would.

“Are you ready?” I asked her, tilting my head and looking up at her. She ruffled the feathers on her head as if saying yes.

When a drop of water fell on my cheek, I blinked and looked down to wipe it away. The rain worsened. Still, my intentions remained the same.

A thin bubble made from my chaos encircled me, and as I took a breath and closed my eyes, I heard Lucian call my name.

I slipped into his mind with ease. “It’s okay,” I told him. “I know what I’m doing.”

“Natalie, what are you doing?" he asked, and like a blooming flower, I opened myself up to the virus.

“What I have to,” I told him. “Stay back.”

When whispers entered my mind from Tedara, the primordial Goddess of chaos who’d given me these powers—the same Goddess Cedric was using to create this foul virus—I paused. I hadn't heard her in quite some time, so I hesitated. Whenever the Primordial tried talking to me from her realm of imprisonment, all I could usually hear were whispers.

But there had been a few times, in dire situations, when I’d heard her, as clear as day, telling me not to do something or letting me know that I was in danger. She often wanted to make herself heard in situations like this, when I called on the full force of my powers.

I knew the dangers. I knew my body wasn't built for this, but Tedara believed I was strong enough to have control over her Primordial powers. She’d given me this burden—the responsibility of fighting chaos with chaos to end this war and free her.

I shook my head and ignored the incoherent whispers, trying to focus on what I was doing.

"Natalie!" Lucian yelled, and my eyes opened, changing from blue to orbs of red.

He was dragged back into the fight against his will, fighting a gorgon with snakes for hair. My body went limp, and like the chaos within me that I felt constantly, I connected with the chaos in the virus and whispered for it to come home.

It didn’t belong where it was, changed in a lab to be this destructive thing, to be what it was.

This time, when the virus screeched in rage, I wasn't the only one that could hear it. Lucian covered his ears, as did Zeus. The gods and the infected souls and gods all fell to the ground, wailing and clawing at their bodies.

I gritted my teeth, calling the chaos home to me, and the virus started seeping from the ears, mouths, and eyes of every infected.

"Natalie!" The Goddess appeared before me. "What are you doing? You can’t absorb all of this power.”

I didn’t answer because that was exactly what I was about to do. Of course, I could do it. It was just a matter of willing it. That was how my chaos worked.

Primordial power had created the realms, the universe, and life. It was the highest form of power there was. Controlling such power was quite a feat—if my body could take it.

The virus was fighting me to hold onto the chaos, and my body jerked when I finally managed to separate it from the virus. Like tugging on a rope, I pulled it all towards me, and chaos came rushing to me, entering Luna’s body from all angles.

It was like she was in the middle of the ocean, absorbing all the water around her. Although the chaos was entering her, I could feel it. She was an extension of me, after all.

The rain continued to pour down on us, and I clenched my fists and hunched forward, every neuron and cell in my body electrified. I held my head back, my back bending as if to break, and screamed.

The cry was ripped from my throat against my will, and as the last of the chaos entered Luna, she fell, molding with my body until she was gone, and only I remained.

The bubble around me vanished, and I crumbled to the ground. My nails were red, as were my fingertips and the veins visible all over my body. I started shaking violently, and there was silence except for the sound of the rain putting out the fire in the burning city, the drops hitting the ground, and the clap of thunder that was followed by lightning.

The infected were given peaceful deaths and the battle was over—for everyone else at least.

Now on my knees, I leaned back to sit on my heels, my eyes wide and the veins on my neck protruding.

Lucian stepped forward, but was quickly stopped by the Goddess. I couldn't make a sound. The pain was excruciating, and I threw myself forward to pound the ground with my fists, ripping the ground apart with my claws to expel my rage.

I looked around. Gods and goddesses were staring at me, with worry, but also with astonishment and fear. I wanted to hurt them. Goddess, I wanted to hurt them all, but my drive to protect them was greater.
