"Yes, you do. Your cunt of a mother and her puzzles. She thought I had real interest in her. Fuck no. I only needed her because I had a particularly sadistic business partner who liked to pay me with brain teasers. Fucking diamonds in a puzzle box. Now open that damn thang.”

“My God, you are dumb. I told you I don’t know how.”

“I promise you I’ll go easy on you if you do. I promise not to let any of my men fuck you raw. I promise to make it not hurt for too long. Just open the damn box."

"And I promise to make your life hell. I hate you. And I can't open your fucking box. Also, you're going to die."

He whirled around as a shot rang out.

CHAPTER 49

SAINT

I fired my gun,but when I blinked, Igno was still standing. Thankfully, so was Kaya, but there was pain in my shoulder. Fucking hell. I frowned when I touched it. The sticky wetness greeted me and I cursed. "The fuck?"

It must have been a random shot that got me when I stood to take out Igno. I didn't have any choice in the middle of this fire fight. "Kaya, run," I yelled as I went back down behind the table.

She made it only three steps, and Igno went after her. Crouching over, I fired in his direction and he stopped and yelled, "I swear before God, I will shoot her. I will shoot my daughter if you don’t call your men off."

I shouted over the table. "Sorry man, I’m not in charge. They are not my men. I'm only here for her."

"Call them off."

"I'd love to, but no chance, Igno."

A barrage of bullets flew my way, and I ducked down.I wanted to lay down some fire, but I was too afraid of hitting Kaya.

Suddenly, it was silent. That sort of deadly silence where the air was filled with the smell of death and gunpowder.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

Kaya. Where was Kaya?

I ran toward the door that she and Igno had come through before. As I slipped through the door, I hit my com unit. "I think Igno is headed toward the South tower. Someone give me assistance covering the guards."

All I heard in return was a gurgled reply. I didn't know who it was or if anyone was coming to help me. I didn't care. All I wanted was Kaya safe. All I wanted was her to know that I'd come for her.

She knows you are here. She knows you didn’t abandon her.

Up ahead, I heard Kaya yelling, "I'm not coming with you."

I just had to get her away from him and everything would be okay. Despite the searing pain in my shoulder, I ran after her.

In the distance, I could hear gunfire and more explosions. For once, Drake Webster had provided decent intel. I was just as angry as Saff and Lachlan were when Gabe spared his life. We weren't in the business of killing people, but someone like that… The man murdered Saff's parents, and the fact that he was allowed to walk around was an insult. But sure enough, he was free. Well, in a sense. The deal was he got to breathe air while he turned on his former employer. And so far, he’d lived up to his end of the bargain.

I saw their shadows heading into the gardens, and I ran faster. The pain in my shoulder was only a distant ache, but still, I was moving sluggishly. Not nearly as fast as I needed to be to get to her.

Even as he tried to drag her into a tunnel, Kaya broke away, elbowing him hard and then punching him in the face before darting out.

That’s a good girl.

Raising my weapon, I was close enough to shout, "Igno, stop. You don't want to do this. You don't want to hurt her. She is your daughter."

"Let me be fucking clear with you, she's no daughter of mine. She can't open the box for me. She has outlived her usefulness."

"Here's the thing, maybe she doesn't know right now, but maybe in the future she’ll remember. Killing her seems a little short-sighted."

He fired a shot in my direction, and I ducked behind one of the statues but it was shitty cover. As I fired in his general direction, I prayed to God that Kaya was deep in the gardens somewhere and headed for the other side. I knew there was a running trail on the edge of the gardens, a pond, and then beyond that, there was a parking area.
