"I've been working really hard. I just haven't been able to focus the way I wanted to, so please don't fail me. I would love to take the class again, but honestly, I'd rather take some of the more advanced classes, and I don't want to repeat this intro again if I don't have to, and…"

He shook his head slowly. "Are you all right?" His voice was low and soothing. And he didn't sound the least bit annoyed. His dark blond hair was artfully tousled, and his silvery gray eyes were level on mine.

"Um, yeah, I think so."

"Good, that's all that matters. From now on you'll be focused?"

"Yessir. I'm here. I swear."

"That's all I wanted to know."

"That's it? I'm not in trouble?"

He lifted a brow and then pushed himself to his full height. I staggered back because, Lord Almighty, he was tall. There was a knock at the door, and I turned to see his wife, Imani, strolling toward us. She gave me a wide beaming smile and then a softer one for her husband. "I'm sorry, am I early? Didn't mean to interrupt."

I couldn't help but smile at her. "No, of course not, sorry. I'll just be going."

I looked up at him again. His gaze was fully on his wife, and he looked…wolfish. It was the only way to describe it. He honestly looked like he was all teeth and wanted to eat her whole.

God, to have someone look at me like that.

You had someone who looked at you like that.

Okay, that was true, but he couldn't just fix things by buying me something.

It's not about buying you something. It's about giving you the home that you wanted.

When I thought about it like that, my heart broke in two. I wanted a home with him. I wanted him to love me. I wanted all of it. God, I missed him so much. It had been two weeks since I woke up in medical at Rogues. He hadn't called. He hadn't texted. Not that I wanted to hear from him, but still.

You do want tohear from him.

Every night when I went to bed, I heard his voice in my head, whispering how much he loved me, and then I would replay how he broke my heart. I would replay how it felt to have him walk away. I couldn't risk that again.

Is this thing that you're doing much better? Are you happy?

Well, that was easy. I was not happy. I had a hole carved out of my soul.

But how dare he just buy me a flat? Well, a whole building really. I couldn't be bought. How dare he give me the perfect gift? A home. I didn't ask him for anything.

You know the answer to that. You know why.

As I walked past the cafe, Gemma called up to me. "Hey Kaya, where the hell are you going?"

"I have to see a man about a deed."

"Ugh, thank God. Honestly, you've been moping for weeks now. I didn't want to say anything, but moping does not look good on you. It's not your color."

"Gee, thanks."

"I keep it real. Go on, mate. Go have the shag of a lifetime."

"That's not why I'm going to see him."

"Sure, it's not. But it's going to be a consequence of you telling him that you're angry, that you miss him, and that you love him too. You recognize that, right?"

"You know, I never did like you."

She grinned and then gave me a quick hug before sauntering off. "Have fun."
