“Me? Who is it?” I asked, even as my belly flip-flopped, as some pathetic, needy part of me hoped it was him. Seeley. Even though I knew there was no way.

“Go on,” Michael said, actually shooing me.

I can’t express the disappointment I felt inside when I saw that it was, yes, a biker there. But not Seeley.

Levee.

Of all people.

And there was a little person in an interesting bowler hat at his side.

“Are you hurt?” I asked, gaze moving over him.

“You know, actually, I’ve had this ach—“ Levee started, only to get nudged by the other man. “No,” he said, shaking his head.

“Then why are you here?”

“Listen, I’m no nosey Nellie,” Levee started.

“Bullshit. You knew everyone’s business in our old building,” I reminded him. He’d been like one of the old ladies looking out their curtains, getting dirt on all the neighbors.

“And who was it that always knew when Marybeth was coming home from her shift dancing, looking all hot and glittery?”

“Think that only served your interest, Levee,” I told him, shaking my head. God, he’d been obsessed with Marybeth, a woman in her late twenties who treated him like a somewhat annoying little brother. “But if you’re not hurt, why are you here?”

“Well, listen, see, you have put me in a really uncomfortable place,” Levee said.

“Me? What did I do?”

“You’re forcing me to be the level-headed adult here, and I really, really resent it,” he said, giving me a boyish smirk.

“Heaven forbid.”

“I know, right?” he said, sighing heavily. “Anyway. It has come to my attention that shit has gone down with you and my man, Seeley, again,” he said.

“That’s not really your—“

“That’s what I’m saying. It’s not my business. But, see, when my man is walking around like a zombie, it becomes my business. So here I am. And here is Teddy,” he said, waving toward his friend.

“Dr. Stone,” Teddy said, nodding at me.

“Ah, hi. But why are the two of you here?”

“Oh, right. Well, I’m here to take you to Seeley. And since I don’t have a car, just a bike, and you can’t hold on with that bum arm of yours, Teddy offered to be the ride.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you,” I said, shaking my head.

“Not even for Seeley?”

“Seeley doesn’t want to see me,” I insisted.

“No offense, sweetheart,” Levee said, smirking, “But I don’t think either of you know what the hell you want at this point.”

“Where is Seeley?” I asked.

“At the clubhouse. He’s been there,” Levee said, pointing at Michael who was clearly eavesdropping a few feet away.

“What?” I asked, looking at him.
