Her eyes widen in surprise. “Maybe she’s gone to dance or to the bar.”

“Yeah, maybe.” My eyes go to Taylor’s empty wineglass. “I’m going to head to the bar. Do you want anything?”

They both say no, so I slip away from the table, using needing a drink as an excuse to see where she is. I’ve got no right to be jealous. We’re not together and I made it clear we never could be, but that doesn’t stop me going to look for her. I push my way through the crowd, heading in the direction I saw her last. When I get to the top of the stairs, I look over the railing and spot her at the bottom of the stairs. She makes her way across the bar toward the exit. I frown and look for Wright. I don’t see him, but is she leaving with him? My stomach rolls at the thought.

I jog down the stairs and take the same route she did out of the club. When I get outside, I look left and right, frantically searching for her. The sidewalk is full of people, but I don’t see her. I glance across the street and breathe a sigh of relief when I find her sitting on a bench opposite the club. She hasn’t seen me yet, and I take a second to watch her. I won’t be surprised if Lewis Wright has hit on her. She’s stunning, and I know I won’t be the only guy to think it. Suddenly, she looks up, smiling when she sees me.

I cross the road and sit down on the bench next to her. “What are you doing out here? Is everything okay?”

“I just needed some air.”

“Where did Wright go?”

“Wright?”

“The guy you were talking to.”

“Home to his wife and newborn baby.” My face must give away my surprise, and she laughs. “Why do you look so surprised?”

“I… I thought…” I shake my head. “Never mind.”

“You thought he was hitting on me?”

“I saw him get out his phone. I thought you were giving him your number.”

“He was showing me pictures of his daughter.”

“Oh.” I feel like an idiot. I had no idea he was married.

“I didn’t think you noticed who I was talking to. Not with Kristie on your lap,” she says quietly, her eyes dropping from mine. “I guess if you’re out here, you didn’t like her suggestion of a threesome?”

“Fuck no! I thought Wyatt might try and set me up with someone, but I wasn’t expecting that!”

“Why would he try and set you up?”

“He thinks I need to get laid.” I don’t tell her why he thinks that.

“Did you want to be set up?”

“No.”

“Why did you follow me out here?”

I blow out a breath. “I thought you might have been leaving with Wright.”

“And if I had been?”

I want to tell her that I’d have hated her leaving with him, but I can’t. What good would it do? “I don’t know,” I whisper. She stares at me. “Why did you really come out here, Taylor?”

She shrugs. “Because I didn’t want to watch you with Kristie.” She shakes her head. “It’s stupid, I know.”

“It’s not stupid.” She shivers and wraps her arms around herself. “Do you want to go back inside?”

“I guess.”

“We don’t have to go back upstairs. We can get a drink with the regular people.”

She laughs. “Okay. Being with the regular people sounds good.”
