The door opens and we walk out. “Then why are you? Is this about Ash?”

His eyes widen in surprise. “How did you know?”

“Because I saw how you reacted last night. You need to let it go.”

He frowns. “Let it go? I need to know she’s okay.”

We’ve reached my apartment, and I open the door, stepping inside. Nash follows, and I toss my keys on the table in the entryway.

“She’s okay.”

He swings his body around to face me. “You know what’s going on?”

“No.”

“How do you know she’s okay, then?”

“Because I asked Taylor, and she told me she was. That’s all I need to know.”

“But that guy is way older than her. You can’t be happy about that.”

“Fuck, Nash. I know better than anyone that you can’t help who you fall in love with.”

“She’s in love with him?” he shouts, and I roll my eyes.

“God! I didn’t say that. I have no idea if she’s in love with him. If she does want to be with him, though, what are you going to do about it? Try and stop her?” I blow out a breath. “Maybe the girls are right, and we need to back off.” He looks at me like I’ve asked him to run through the streets of Hope Creek naked. I roll my eyes. “What happened with Paisley?”

“She got sick of me asking her to tell me what was going on.”

“You can’t let this come between you, Nash. Whatever she knows, it’s not her secret to tell and you need to respect that. It’s Christmas Day, man. You shouldn’t be arguing. Ash would hate this has happened because Paisley was keeping a confidence.”

He sits down heavily on the stool at the breakfast bar.

“I’ve been an idiot, haven’t I?”

I raise my eyebrows. “Yeah, but you can fix it. Go home and talk to her.”

“Thanks, Seb. I’m not sure when you became so good at relationship advice.”

I laugh. “Trust me. I’m not.”

He walks toward the entryway. “I’m an asshole for leaving her alone on Christmas Day.”

“She’s not alone,” I tell him, walking up behind him.

He spins around and frowns. “Who’s with her?”

I smile sheepishly. “Taylor.”

“You called Taylor after I called you…?” He trails off before raising his eyebrows. “You were with Taylor last night.”

It’s not a question, more of a statement, but I answer anyway.

“Yes.”

“What’s going on with you two?”

He walks out of the apartment, and I turn my back on him while I lock up.
