“Only if you promise to be on your best behavior.” He lifted his arm, pushing the tip of his index finger in my face.

“Who, me? I’m a good girl.”

“Uh-huh.” He opened the door, lifting his eyebrows when I didn’t immediately come inside.

I took a deep breath and accepted his gesture, still feeling like an intruder. I couldn’t imagine what he was going through.

“Do you want a drink? I was getting ready to have one.” He eyed me curiously, his upper lip curling.

“I’d love one. If that’s okay.”

“I’m offering, aren’t I?”

Shrugging, I trailed behind him, noticing Lily and the puppy through one of the large all-glass doors. “This is beautiful.”

“It suited my brother. Not my style.”

“What is your style?”

He remained the sulking man I’d remembered, scanning the kitchen before opening the refrigerator. “Not sure what else to offer you. I haven’t had time to do an inventory.”

I noticed there were groceries still on the counter, including a gallon of milk and eggs. “I’ll have whatever you’re having.”

“Whiskey it is.”

He said nothing as I moved toward the bags, finding the cold items then placing them in the refrigerator. When he remained quiet, I opened various cabinets, finally finding the pantry door. The room was almost larger than my bedroom. As I started putting the rest of the things away, I could feel his heated gaze penetrating the partially open door. When I’d finished, closing the door, prickles danced across my skin.

“I hope you didn’t mind.” I smoothed my hands down my shorts, turning to face him slowly.

He had the most penetrating stare of any man I’d ever met.

“Help yourself.” Savage slid the glass along the island then moved to the kitchen window, able to watch Lily. While the backyard was fenced, there was a pool and I could sense he was nervous, uncertain what to do.

“She’s very precocious.”

“She reminds of my brother when he was younger. The kid was a knucklehead, always getting into trouble. Lily is going to be tough to raise. I feel it.”

“Well, girls are tougher to handle but I have a feeling you can manage just fine.”

“Don’t jump to any further conclusions, Harlow. I’m not a good man.”

“So you keep trying to tell me.”

“I tell the truth, unlike some people I know.”

Exhaling, I took a sip of my drink. “I guess I deserved that. Maybe you could let me explain.”

“What’s there to explain? You needed a job since you were fired from your old one. My brother is a sucker for beautiful women. Always was.”

“It wasn’t about attraction. That’s not fair, Savage. I’m good at what I do. I just… pissed off my boss.”

“Oh, yeah? Why does that not surprise me?” He shot me a look over his shoulder, another round of amusement in his eyes.

“Did the person you called tell you why I was fired?”

He took a sip of his drink before answering. “You know they’re not allowed to by law.”

“Which means she did. Didn’t she? Let me guess, you talked to Sassy?” I could tell he wasn’t planning on answering me. “Well, if I’m right then she told you that I was a terrible account executive, which wasn’t true. I brought in almost fifty percent of the business last year.” He still said nothing. “Okay, maybe forty percent, but four were national accounts that made us a lot of money. I should say made my ex-boss a lot of money, the lowlife piece of shit.”
