"Nic! I'm fine. I'm refusing care, you know you can't force me to do something I don't want to do." I refuse to waste hospital resources on a little fainting spell.

"Nyla, please." He begs me and I can see the utter agony etched on his face. He's so worried.

I hate to waste the resources, but I hate to see him look like that even more.

"Ugh... fine. Only the preliminary stuff. Once that comes back normal, you'll all leave me alone." I shoot hard stares at the three of them, just to make sure they've all heard me.

When I get a nod from each of them, I lean back and let them do what they were doing. My EKG, and vitals are normal, just like I knew they would be. Nic insisted on running a blood panel and had me take an urinalysis, just in case I had some sort of infection I didn't know about. I have no fever, so I was pretty confident that I don't.

I really haven't been taking that good of care of myself. Being heartbroken certainly has a way of screwing with the appetite.

The three of them are moving slower now that I'm no longer passed out. Nic is in the corner looking over the EKG print out trying to find some imaginary anomaly while Nurses Lee and Thomas are putting in the paperwork for my labs.

As a nurse, especially one that has worked in so many different places, sometimes I can run completely on autopilot. Most of the time, in a clinic setting, things are mostly the same. Same respiration rate, same urine colors, same print-outs from the machines.

It's only when things are different do we take notice. As the result's printout comes sliding up from the urinalysis machine do I realize what the problem is.

My results are not in range, one in particular.

Laughter I can't contain comes bubbling up out of my soul, and the three of them race over to me. I try to settle myself down, but I can't.

"This might be another symptom. I need that lab panel done fucking yesterday!" Nic growls out.

"No! No..." I move my hand, swiping side to side to get my point across. "It's okay...I'm okay... okay..." I say, willing myself to get it together, before I look at Nic. "I don't think I'm going to be able to take that job position I asked for." I say, and his eyebrows furrow down hard.

"God damn it, Nyla, is this some sort of joke or something. I'm not playing games with you." He all but snarls.

"No, not a joke. I think I'm going to need to go on medical leave first." The three of them are still standing there looking at me like I'm crazy.

I shake my head and sit up, looking back at the seemingly innocent print out. "Ardi, why don't you go over there and read my urinalysis results."

She turns quickly and tears the small paper off the machine before her eyes start to scan the results. I see the second when she sees what I see.

"Oh my god!" She jumps up and down excited, "You're pregnant!"

Nic's head snaps in her direction as Ardi rushes over and hugs me. He snatches the paper from her and looks at it himself. He covers his mouth with his hand and his eyes open wide before they crinkle with joy.

"Pregnant. You're pregnant?" He grabs my arm away from both Megan and Ardi, who are telling me congratulations. He pulls me into his chest and hugs me tightly.

"You're pregnant."

He repeats.

"Yeah, that's what the paper says." I pull back and gaze into his eyes just to be sure.

There's no mistaking the joy or the love there.

He leans in and kisses me deeply before pulling his lips away and resting his forehead against mine.

"Nyla, I love you so much. You've made me happier than anything else in the world. "

I run my hand through the hairs on his nape and close my eyes, soaking up all that he is.

"I know, Nic, I love you more."

I sigh and relax further against him, nothing feels better than being home and in his arms that's exactly where I am.
