“True,” she said. “So what do you want to do?”

“I don’t know. I thought we could go and get dresses like you said.”

“Okay. You want to hit up Rodeo Drive?”

I stared at her and started laughing. “Are you out of your mind, Poppy? Neither one of us has money to purchase dresses on Rodeo Drive.”

“We both have credit cards, and you’re about to get a paycheck.”

“Yeah, which I want to use to get a new apartment. How are you going to pay off your credit card?”

“Dad pays off a couple of grand each month, and I haven’t really spent much this month.” She shrugged. “I can get away with it.”

“I mean, it would be kind of cool to wear something really nice. But if I’m just going as Travis’s assistant—”

“His well-paid assistant, though.”

“True. Plus, he’s probably hooked up with half of the people there. I want to look good.”

“Yeah, girl, you want to look sexy.”

“Okay, but I have one favor to ask of you, Poppy.”

“Okay. What’s that?”

“If you meet Dominic or, rather, when you meet Dominic…”

“Yeah?” She nodded.

“Please do not flirt with him. Do not even speak to him.”

“Um, okay. Why’d you say that?”

“Because he’s a jerk.”

“What do you mean, ‘he’s a jerk’?”

“He just seems like an asshole. And he’s very good looking, so I’m sure he’ll be charming. But please ignore him. I’m all foryou having an exciting adventure with someone, but trust me: Dominic is not the guy.”

“I haven’t even met him yet,” she said, laughing.

“I’m just warning you. It’s not because I don’t want you to have fun, because I do. But if you have fun with him, everyone in LA will know about it. Trust me.”

“Okay, I trust you,” she said, “Mommy. You ready to go?”

“Sure. Can we get some coffee first, though? The coffee they provided with the breakfast was just not strong enough.”

“I know,” she said, nodding vehemently. “Why is it that hotel coffee always sucks?”

“I don’t know,” I said, laughing. “But let’s head to a coffee shop and get something first.”

“Sounds good. Let’s go down to the lobby.”

We made our way out of the room and to the elevator. I studied Poppy’s appearance as we went down in the elevator, and I noticed she was wearing a trendy outfit.

“You look really nice today, Poppy.”

“Thanks,” she said. “I totally went on Instagram and looked up several models. I saw what they were wearing and created my outfit based upon their style.”
