“It’s a great thing,” he said. “But no, if I think it’s too early… If we think it’s too early,” he stressed, “to buy you diamond jewelry, don’t you think it’s too early for us to get married? Especially eloping?”

“I know, but the way you were going on all excited and urgent, I figured it was going to be something super intense.”

“Well, our first vacation together would be intense.”

“Oh,” I said. “So you want us to do the business trip and then just vacation together?”

He nodded. “Yeah. I figured we could spend some time in the Amazon rainforest and then maybe fly over to a couple of the Caribbean islands.”

“Wow.” I stared at him in surprise. “I can’t afford any of that.” I bit down on my lower lip. “Which I know you know because I can’t even afford to upgrade my apartment yet, and I keep asking you when I’ll get my first paycheck.”

“Obviously, you don’t have to pay for any of the tickets. And I’ve got the hotels unless you’re going to be stubborn and say you’re not going to let me pay for the hotels.”

“No, I’m not that stupid.” I giggled. “But how long are you thinking? Because…”

“Because what? Do you have something you need to do or somewhere you need to be?”

“I mean, I don’t know. I have to check my calendar. And you haven’t even said when we’re going to go and…”

“I thought we could go at the end of next week.”

“But we’ll just be getting back from California then,” I said, surprised.

“Yeah.” He nodded. “Will that be a problem?”

“I mean no, I guess not. I mean, my only real items on my schedule right now are working for you and hanging out with Alice, Foster, Rosalie, and Oliver, and I guess they won’t miss me if I’m gone for a week or so.”

“Perfect. Will you book the tickets?”

“Me?” I said, staring at him. “But…”

“Don’t worry. I’ll give you a corporate credit card.” He laughed. “And you can get some new clothes.”

“I’m not using a corporate credit card to get new clothes.”

“You’ll need some for the rainforest, I assume.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, you’ll need some hiking boots, and you’ll need some mosquito-proof pants and a rain jacket and…”

“Oh shit, this sounds intense.”

“It will be a little intense, but I think it will be fun. And the first part into the rainforest actually will be part business, so you don’t have to feel like you’re spending the money on new attire for pleasure.”

I stared at him through narrowed eyes. “What business are you doing in the rainforest?”

“Well, I have an interest in a gold mine and a timber company. Did you do any research on me?” He stared at me, a crinkle in the corner of his eyes.

“A little bit.” I laughed. “But if I’m honest, it was mainly checking out who you were dating.”

“Oh, Molly,” he said. “This is why I’m falling for you.”

“Why, you’re falling for me because I suck?”

“No, I’m falling for you because you’re honest, and you think with your heart.”

“Yeah, but that’s not really good in a businesswoman, is it?”
