“I’m not mad, I’m just so surprised that you would hang my clothes and keep my stuff that I left behind.” He cups my face between his hands.

“It was all I had left of you so of course I would keep it. They may be just material things but when they are all you have left, they mean so much more.” I swoon a little inside, the way he ducks his head to hide his eyes I realize he’s shy about discussing his feelings. It’s endearing to finally find something that he isn’t comfortable with, I feel in power now that the shoe is on the other foot. Deciding to take pity on him I ask instead.

“Why didn’t Sheba fight for control when you were in wolf form?” A sexy smirk graces his lips.

“Because our wolves have finally seen each other as equals.” I gasp and open the link to Sheba.

Is that true?

Yes, our mate is strong and fearless.

So, you won’t fight him anymore?Sheba scoffs and I fight the laugh that wants to bubble out of me.

Never!I can’t hold back, I laugh, and Creed narrows his eyes playfully at me.

“What did Sheba have to say?”

“Ummmmm, I think she really is my soul mate.”

“Why?”

“She agrees you’re a good mate, but she refuses to never fight you on anything.” He chuckles and shakes his head as he plants a featherlight kiss to my forehead.

“I would expect no less from her… or you.”

Chapter

Forty Five

Jessica

We’ve been back in Rosewood for two weeks now and everything is…quiet. We aren’t fooling ourselves though, we know this is the calm before the storm. We have learnt from some of the towns folk that remained that Jacob and his pack chased most of them out, it was a relief to know that they did that in human form and didn’t expose our secret. The pack has been busy trying to help cleanup the town and with the re-opening of the stores. We have tried to reach out to as many of the humans that fled, some of them refused to return and sold their homes to us or their businesses. The ones that did return were happy and willing to help with re-opening stores. Creed and I agreed that it would be a bonus for the kids in our pack and Ro’s to attend school and return to some form of normality. The kids will start back next week, Callie has even agreed to teach in the local Kindergarten, and Meg has signed on as principle for the high school. Zeke and Cole offered to take over teaching the sporting programs and honestly, I couldn’t have picked two better people for the job. Asher and Tommy are both going to run the local hardware store, everyone seems to be pitching in, and honestly Creed and I couldn’t be more grateful.

“I don’t want to go with Aunt Callie.” I shake my head to clear my thoughts and sigh. Creed shoots me a pleading look to take over this talk with our son. He has not been open to the idea of going to school with Callie next week. We have to prepare him so Creed and I can plan and prep for an attack, I know it will be good for him to be around other kids his own age. I reach out and run my fingers through his hair, I’m still taken back that he will let Creed cut it considering he refused for years!

“Monster, you need to go so you can learn and make friends.” He slumps back in his chair and crosses his arms over his chest.

“I don’t want friends, daddy says they oberated.” I glare at Creed as he tries to hide his smile.

“Friends arenotoverrated; friends are great, and they help you. If you don’t make friends, who will you invite to your birthday party in a couple of months?” That seems to pique his interest.

“Your mother is right, if you make friends then we can have a big party and invite them all here.”

“Promise?” I shoot Creed a look urging not to make a promise he can’t keep; he ignores the look and smiles wide.

“I promise buddy. I missed four birthdays already, and I will not let another one go by where I don’t get to throw my favorite guy in the whole world a party fit for a king.” A lump forms in my throat as I watch Creed and Harlem embrace each other, I really hope Creed is able to fulfil his promise to our son.

That evening Creed and I decided to hold a small meeting at Meg’s house, I know Creed still feels a bit awkward coming here because it holds dark memories for him, I squeeze his hand as we enter the house, he smiles but it doesn’t reach his eyes. I sigh and let him lead me to the dining room, I smile when I see my son on a small stool in the kitchen cooking with Meg. Harlem has been a great distraction for her, I know she misses Kane even though he hurt her, she has been pushing Creed to search for him. Creed being the stubborn ass that he is, refuses, he thinks I don’t know that he has been sending out search parties every couple of days, I haven’t said anything about it to him. Creed releases my hand and makes his way toward our son and his mom; he places a kiss on her cheek and ruffles Harlem’s hair which earns him a dark scowl from the moody four-year-old.

We all take our seats around the table, Ro, Z, Callie, Sky and Cole join us for dinner. Everyone makes small talk and it’s nice to see everyone relaxed and not so on edge like we have been for the past few weeks. This false sense of eutopia that we have allowed ourselves to fall into is just a mask.

“We have to hunt and flush them out, I won’t keep looking over my shoulder.” All conversation around the table stops and all eyes swing to me. Creed sighs then turns to our son and says.

“Why don’t you go into the living room and play with your trains, and I’ll bring you desert soon?” Harlem nods his head eagerly and jumps from his chair.

“Jess is right, this shit has to end.”

“How do you propose we do that when we can’t find them?” Ro and Z exchange a loaded look before answering Creed.
