“We may have a lead.” I stare at my brother with my mouth hanging open.

“How?” Callie asks. Cairo doesn’t give anything away; he remains stoic and his face an emotionless mask, but Z very quickly darts his gaze to Sky and back to us, that’s all I need to know. They have a lead, and it is something to do with Skylar Cage, Sky is like a vault, you won’t be able to crack her unless she wants you to know. Callie must have seen Zeke’s subtle glance at her mate because now she is scowling at Sky. “Care to fill the rest of the class in on what we are missing, darling?” The way she says darling has Sky cringing and both my brother and Z leaning back into their chairs.

“Oh shit, hurricane California is brewing.” Creed and Cole may act tough and like alpha males but at the first sign of their sister about to pop off they both scoot their chairs toward the end of the table where their mother sits shaking her head.

“Fuck up Colton!” Callie doesn’t take her eyes off Sky as she snaps at her brother.

“Mom, can Cole and I be excused?” I gape at Creed; he has to be joking. He shrugs his shoulders and then mouthsshe’s crazy.

“You fucking pussy, stay the hell where you are!” Creed snaps his mouth closed and averts his gaze to the ceiling, I have never seen him, and Cole behave like this before, mind you I have never actually seen Callie lose her shit properly either. “I’m waiting, darling!”

“Babe––“

Callie scoffs. “Don’t fuckingbabeme. You promised not to keep me in the dark with any of this, you always shut me out whereheis concerned!” She shouts while pointing at my brother, Cairo at least has the decency to avert his gaze and keep his mouth shut. Sky doesn’t waiver as she meets Callie’s gaze, these two fiery women are a match made in heaven.

“You knew where I stood withhimbefore we became an item, he is my alpha, and I can’t betray him.”

“Can’t or won’t?” I hear the watery tone in Callie’s voice and know she is close to tears; I hate that this shit is coming between them. I know Sky is loyal as fuck to my brother and I still have no idea why, but from the look on her face I can tell she is trying to find a way to let her mate down gently.

“California… Please don’t––“

“No! I have told you before I don’t want to be treated like my bro––“Callie quickly clamps her mouth closed and then faces me with wide eyes, I smile sadly and reach out to place my hand on hers.

“Like your brother treated me?” She nods and I can feel Creed’s gaze boring into the back of my head but ignore it. “You and Sky are nothing like Creed and me, maybe just let her keep you in the dark?”

Callie shakes her head. “I don’t want to be in the dark, Jess. I have been in the dark most of my life and I don’t want my own mate to treat me like that.” I wrap my arms around her and hold her close, I’m surprised when I feel both Cole and Creed press up behind me and each of them land a hand on their sisters back offering their silent support.

“I respect the fuck out of you Sky, always have and probably always will, but I will not let you hurt my sister because you have some misguided loyalty to your alpha. My sister loves you and she is right, she deserves way fucking better than how I treated Jess, don’t make the same mistakes I did because believe me, it isn’t worth it in the end.” I’m so proud of Creed for speaking his truth, he becomes my soul focus and it’s hard to tear my gaze from him when Sky speaks.

“You know nothing Alpha––“

Ro cuts Sky off. “Enough, she is your mate, and she has a right to know.” For the first time since I met Sky, I get a clear read on her emotions, her mask has slipped, and her emotions are on display for all to see. The silence in the room stretches for so long, I begin to think no one is going to talk, Callie pulls out of my hold and turns to face her mate who is solely focused on my brother.

“Take it from someone whose been in love with a compulsive liar for more than half my life. Whatever is keeping you from telling my daughter the truth or whoever you are protecting, is that thing or person worth risking losing the love of your life over? Forgive me, I don’t mean to overstep, but as California’s mother, my daughter deserves more from her mate and sure as hell does not deserve to be lied to.” Meg runs her gaze over each of us and it pains me to see the unshed tears in her eyes, she still loves Kane. “Now, I will leave you kids to sort this out while I take my grandson some desert. If it’s okay with you and Jess son, I would like to take Harlem with me to the pack bon fire tonight, I will have him back before bedtime?”

Is that okay with you?It doesn’t shock me as much now that I’m used to hearing him in my head.

Yeah, I think he will like spending time with your mom.

“Go for it mom, I think the monster will love to spend some time with you.” Meg smiles and scurries from the room grabbing a couple of chocolate muffins on her way out. Cole and Creed move back to their seats, but Creed pulls his close enough to me that his leg brushes against mine. Sheba stirs inside me and purrs at the contact from our mate. My wolf has some serious issues, right now is not the time to be thinking about our mate and how he can make our body soar when he is inside me––.

“Jessica!” I snap my gaze to my brother, and I feel the heat coating my cheeks and hope to God no one around the table can scent my arousal.

“Sorry, I was… distracted.” He narrows his eyes at me but lets it go.

“I was just saying now that Callie and Sky have agreed to sort their matters out privately, we should go over the plan.”

“Yeah Ro, why don’t you fill us in on how you and Zeke know something we don’t.” Z rolls his eyes and scoffs.

“Yeah, that isn’t going to happen but what we can say is that we have it on good authority that Jacob and his pack has taken to hiding in the mountains.” What the hell.

“Why?” Cole grits out.

“Apparently some shit went down between him, and the council and they have closed him out.” Ro raises his hand to stop Creed from interrupting Zeke. “We honestly don’t know what happened between him and the council all we do know is that he and what is left of his pack are in the mountains somewhere.”

“Wait, what do you mean what is left of his pack?” Z and Ro share a look before Ro takes over the conversation.

“According to our source, when the split between Jacob and the council happened some of his pack fled with the council and the others just left… on their own I guess.”
