No, we end this tonight, Creed, we don’t have a choice!

Before Cole and I can finish speaking a group of wolves’ head in our direction, we split up, so we don’t get cornered. As I make my way through the battle to Jess, I dodge bodies of fallen wolves, renewed determination flows through me, I will not let my pack fail. My worry for Jess is clouding my job as alpha, so I do the only thing I can and pray that she can hold her own. I push away my worries for her and focus on trying to find Jacob, if I take him out then his pack will fall under my rule and I can stop this killing.

By the time I spot Jacob on the ridge I’m limping and bloodied, Corbin is tired after fighting off so many wolves. I wanted to give them a chance to stop fighting and leave but Corbin wouldn’t allow it, in his mind it iskilled or be killed.

Creed!I spin around to see Callie and Davina sprinting toward me, Davina has claw marks over her arms and chest, her clothes are torn but she hides her pain behind her mask. Callie has blood dripping from her jaws, and I notice she isn’t putting too much weight on her left hind leg.

I need to go to Jacob now––

Jess and Cole are already up there! I tried to stop them, but I got attacked and couldn’t chase after them.

My stomach sinks, I turn back toward the ridge and strain my wolf eyes to see clearly and that’s when I see it. My brother’s wolf lay limp on the ground while Jess and Jacob circle each other, with my heart in my throat I take off. The pain and exhaustion I felt seconds ago has vanished as I focus on saving my mate and my little brother, I just hope I make it to them in time. My legs won’t move fast enough, I hear Callie and Davina trailing behind, thanks to Davina’s vampire speed she is able to keep up with us. Corbin pushes us to newfound limits in order to get us to our mate before Jacob can harm her, but still it isn’t fast enough, the seconds feel like minutes and the minutes feel like hours as we navigate our way through the woods and up to the top of the mountain ridge.

Chapter

Fifty Two

Jessica

After helping Sky take down the three wolves, I scan the carnage around myself to hopefully catch a glimpse of my brother, a relieved sigh slips from my snout when I spot him and Zeke ploughing through our enemies like they are but a bug beneath their paws. When I hear a howl that sends shivers down my spine, I turn toward the mountain ridge and that’s when I spot him, standing there in his human form. Rational thought flees me as Sheba takes off toward Jacob, I hear paws pounding the earth behind me and chance a look over my shoulder, when I see it’s Cole I don’t bother to stop or slow, if he wants to follow us then he needs to keep to our pace. I dodge fallen branches and debris as I move through the woods and up the incline to the top of the ridge, I feel Cole right behind me trying to nip at my flanks, but I push Sheba harder. Cole is trying to stop me from facing Jacob and I cannot allow that, this is my fight not his or Creed’s, I need to do this in order to face my demons and come out stronger.

As soon as I break through the last of the brush and emerge at the top of the ridge I see him, he stands there in a Henley, jeans and shit kicker boots, his brown eyes hold so much malice as he looks at me. I dart my gaze to the others with him and growl when I see Kayla is bound and gagged kneeling in front of that council fucker Phillip, he still wears an ill fitted suit and his yellow crooked teeth grind together as he stares down at me and Cole, I don’t know who the other man is that stands next to Phillip but he seems to have an edge of sorts to him that I can’t quite explain. I push thoughts of why Phillip is here and not with other members in Russia from my mind.

“I knew you would find me, I’m a bit chuffed that you thought it wise to come here without your mate though. I mean, who will save you from the big bad wolf now?” Phillip and Jacob chuckle at his stupid joke, having had enough of their shit I growl and snap my jaws toward them. Cole releases a long and loud growl from beside me, Jacob glares at me before turning to Phillip. “Shift and deal with the Reeves mutt while I subdue my mate.” The way he saysmatesends a shiver through Sheba.

We take him down or die trying.

We won’t get caught again Jess; I promise.

If we don’t make it out of this Sheba, just know I’m so thankful you chose me as your human.

She doesn’t respond, instead she breaks away from Cole and moves toward Jacob who is standing near the edge with a smug smile on his face.

“I’m going to make the rest of your life a living hell for what you took from me, you will give me a new heir!” If I was on two legs I would have thrown-up, the thought of his hands on me makes me feel ill. First rule of training Vince taught us was to never take your eyes off of your enemy, but as Jacob grips the waistband of his boxers, I force Sheba to look away, his appendage is not something I want to see. It was a mistake to let my human side take over for even a split second, he uses that to his advantage and attacks before Sheba can even face him. He slams into our side, and we skid along the hard compact dirt, Sheba jumps to her feet in time to dodge his jaws, she backs up to give us some space to assess our opponent. I haven’t seen him in wolf form before, he may be a slimy human, but he is a formidable wolf. His long black coat ruffles in the breeze and his eyes look almost onyx, Jacob’s wolf is a nasty looking beast. Sheba doesn’t seem to feel the way I do, if anything she is giddy at the idea of facing off against a wolf of this size and proving that she is stronger. I hear snarls from beside us but I don’t dare take my eyes off him again and risk him getting the upper hand just so I can check on Cole. I have put off being initiated into pack because of everything that has been going on and now I’m regretting my decision, without that ceremony I am unable to link with any of the pack including Cole.

Jacob launches toward us, and Sheba fakes right only to bounce to the left and sink her jaws into the side of Jacob, the taste of his coppery blood fills our senses but before we can celebrate the small victory a searing pain shoots through our side and we release him with a howl of pain, and he jumps back. Our shoulder burns where he sank his teeth, she growls out in anger as she faces Jacob, our blood drips from his snout and it sends a surge of hate through my wolf.

We need to make this quick Sheba; we’ll tire before he does.

Your confidence in me is awe inspiring.

Sheba shuts the mind link down between us and pushes me back to the furthest part of our mind, I thrash against the cage she has locked my conscious in, but it is futile, the last time she did this I was helpless, maybe it’s better this way at least then she can focus and hopefully take Jacob down once and for all.

Sheba bounds toward Jacob and leaps into the air but he’s quicker, he moves out of the way and manages to use our forward momentum against us and knocks us to the ground then jumps on top of us, Sheba tries to wiggle free and get off her back, but she can’t move him. She manages to dodge his bites twice but isn’t lucky the third time, he sinks his teeth into the side of our neck and Sheba let’s out a horrible yelp of pain. The pain is excruciating, he clamps his jaws down harder and Sheba stops moving or she risks him tearing our throat out. Thoughts of Harlem and Creed plague my mind, if this is the end, then their faces are who I want to see in my mind before I leave this world.

Sheba manages to twist slightly, and I feel the tear of our flesh, I scream inside her mind at the pain, but she doesn’t stop as she bites into his leg so hard, I feel the crunch of his bone. He releases his hold on us with a growl, he yanks his leg free which inflicts more damage tearing the skin from his bone. Sheba rolls and is on her feet, the pain is agonizing but she blocks it out and focuses on Jacob, he limps around us, and Sheba does the same circling him, I can scent our blood and from the sluggish movements Sheba is doing I know we don’t have long before we either bleed out or pass out. Jacob is favoring his leg and it fills me with satisfaction to know that we are the ones that caused that pain for him. He stops in front of Kayla and the other man, Sheba crouches and is about to launch at him but stops when he clamps his jaws down on Kayla’s shoulder, before I can make a move Cole’s wolf sails through the air toward Jacob, before I can even process what the hell is happening, Jacob has half shifted, his torso is human while his lower body is still wolf. He grips the hilt of a knife from the man’s jeans and then swivels enough to plunge the blade into Cole. My restraint snaps as Cole yelps and falls to the ground with the knife sticking out of his chest. I rush to Jacob and as Sheba launches through the air, he has fully shifted back to his wolf, but he was too slow, Sheba clamps her jaws on his neck and shakes him like a rag doll, his cries and howls of pain fill her with glee. Sheba is like a wild animal; his pain is like a balm to her almost as if his pain is making up for what he put us through.

Jacob tries to shake us off and he even manages to get a hold of our leg but still Sheba won’t let go, as he clamps his jaws on our front paw, I feel the snap and know he has broken it but Sheba is too rabid to feel it, she yanks backward and then the satisfying feeling of his flesh tearing and his blood soaking the fur around our jaws lets us know we won, Sheba jumps backward careful not to land on our front paw and spits the flesh from our mouth, we stand and watch as Jacob gasps and staggers until he falls to his side in front of Kayla. His soulless eyes meet mine and Sheba finally lets me take control back, I shift and stagger slightly, the pain in my arm and loss of blood is catching up to me, but I refuse to pass out. I stumble over to his dying wolf and spit at his snout.

“That’s for my mother you piece of shit, I hope you rot in fucking hell!” I grit out, I watch as the life leaves his eyes, and he slowly starts to shift back into human form. I tear my gaze from his and look to Kayla who is bleeding from her shoulder and shaking with silent tears, I look to the man next to her who raises his hands and nods his head respectfully.

“I am not your enemy; I only came to make sure you were the victor.” His gaze darts to the woods behind me. “Our paths will cross again Ms. Hastings, your father was right, you truly are a prize.” I furrow my brow in confusion as the handsome stranger turns and disappears into the woodlands behind him. I make quick work of untying Kayla and then quickly rush over to Cole. He’s shifted back into human form and clutching his side where the knife sticks out, I drop to the ground by his head and help him lift his head with my good arm to rest on my naked thigh.

“You’re going to be okay, just stay awake Colton.” I plead, he smiles up at me and winks.

“He didn’t hit anything vital sweetheart, I won’t die.” The air rushes out of me and the adrenalin begins to wear off. The sound of footfalls snags our attention as we focus on the woods, I scent the air and relax. Creed clears the brush first, then Callie and Davina. His gaze lands on Jacobs lifeless body before he scans the area, when he spots me and Cole he shifts back to human form and rushes over, he drops down beside me and cups my face, I flinch when his hand drops to my neck, he growls when he sees my wound. Before he can overreact, I reach out with my good hand and cup his cheek, I try to smile reassuringly.

“I’m okay, I swear––“He cuts me off by smashing his lips against mine, the kiss ends to quickly when Cole begins to whine.
