“I love you Ro––.”

“Don’t you dare say that like it’s a goodbye!”“I wish it wasn’t, but it is, we can’t outrun our destiny’s, no matter how much we try. Tell Callie I love her––.”

“Give me the phone.” At the sound of her voice, I spin around to spot a tear-stricken California standing behind me with her hand outstretched. I grip the phone tighter not wanting to let go of the only part of Sky I have right now, but I know Callie needs this. I spot Belle leaning against the door jamb to our room with tears in her eyes, she implores me with a look to give Callie this moment with her…mate.

“I love you Skylar, and I’ll find a way around this––I promise.

“Don’t give me hope Ro.” I hand the phone to Callie who shakily places it against her ear, Cole and Creed move closer but stay back giving her space. We all stand here with our gazes on Callie eavesdropping.

“California.” Callie sobs at the sound of her voice. “Don’t cry babe.”

“You’re not coming back, are you?” The brokenness in her voice tears me up.

“Not this time babe, I don’t have long––.”

“How the fuck do you expect me to let you go?” I hear Sky’s sharp inhale and I know without a doubt what she is about to do, and I wish with all my might, that she wouldn’t, but she knows this is the only way Callie will let her go.

“You’re going to let me go because I’m not your mate, I tricked you––.” Callie’s tears run down her cheeks like a stream.

“Don’t do this Sky, I love you.”

“I used you––.”

“Stop it!” Callie shrieks. Cole and Creed move closer, but I raise my hand to stop them, she has to hear this, no matter how much it hurts.

“California, your mate is out there and I’m not it. I tricked you.”

“I don’t care, please Sky, please don’t do this to me, I need you to fight baby. Come back to me.” The sharp exhale from Sky tells me that this is killing her, she never wanted to hurt Callie, but Sky is like me, we use our anger and don’t do feelings.

“Let me go California.” Callie sobs and begins to shake. “Move on with your life because I won’t be part of it anymore, I loved you before you even knew I existed. I’m not sorry that I tricked you, I would do it all again in a heartbeat. Be strong baby and know that my heart was always yours, it’s always been you California.” I hear the line go dead. Callie screams in agony and drops, but I catch her in time, she wails on me punching, slapping, kicking out and clawing my face, but I still hold her. Creed and Cole try to pry her from me, but I won’t let them, she needs this outlet.

“I fucking hate you! This is all your fault; you get your fucking mate and a kid, but I don’t get mine! If you do what she says and kill her, I’ll fucking hunt you down and tear you apart.” I take her anger; I take her hits and her kicks because everything she just said is true. I still have Belle and my baby, but she is losing the woman she loves. It is of no significance that Sky tricked her and made her believe that she was her mate, Callie still fell head over heels for my best friend.

“Don’t cry for her.” Callie pulls against my hold, and I let her go, so she can turn and face Cassius.

“Don’t fucking speak to me!” He moves forward and grips her shoulders, Creed and Cole stalk closer, ready to take him down if he harms their sister. “You don’t get to say her name!” She screams.

“You dishonor her by your actions, your…mate is a warrior and there is no greater honor for her than dying in the midst of a battle. I never got the chance to know her, but from what I have seen and heard, she is fierce and courageous; she wouldn’t want you to cry over her.”

“You know nothing about her, I told you before to stay the fuck away from me Cassius.” She shoves him, but he won’t budge, so she growls in warning, crouching low, ready to strike, her growls intensify the longer he stands there. The tone of her growls shifts, and I know her wolf is just there below the surface we have to stop this now!

“Sky has always known that this was coming.” Callie stops growling, Cass moves to face Belle, who is walking toward us wearing only one of my shirts. I growl and quickly move toward her trying to shield her nakedness from the others, she rolls her eyes and sidesteps me as she continues toward Callie. “The first day you all came to my pack and Sky chased me down, I had a vision then, and a few after. They all gave me an insight of what is about to happen, she never knew of the exact time, only that it was getting closer. She instilled her magic in Cairo, so nature had its way of balancing things.” She takes a shaky breath and steels her spine. “Sky made sure that there was always a way to…end herself, if the need should ever occur, and I believe she knew it would happen. I’m so sorry that this is happening to you Callie, I wish more than anything in the world that I could somehow give you more time with her.” Callie breaks out into gut-wrenching sobs, Creed and Cole are there within a second to hold her. I move toward Belle and see the look of anguish in her eyes, she wishes she could comfort her friend, but thanks to these visions she is unable to do so.

It’s nearly dawn, and I still haven’t slept a wink, I tried but every time I closed my eyes, all I could picture was Sky. Hearing her voice tonight broke something inside me, she pushed me to believe in myself, and that I have the makings of a leader. Becoming an alpha cost my father his life, his best friend turned on him and I guess a part of me always worried that Sky would do the same. Instead, she proved me wrong by fighting alongside me, constantly watching my back, no matter what. Even if I was wrong, she would always be there for me, and then when no one was around she would rip me a new asshole until I finally saw the error in my ways. The sound of footfalls tears me from my trance, I watch as Alexander makes his way over to one of the empty couches and drops down, I lift my glass of whiskey and down the rest. I grab the bottle from the floor and pour myself another, maybe if I drink enough, I’ll be able to forget about everything and finally sleep.

“You can’t save her.” I place the bottle back on the table and take another drink before answering him.

“I know.”

“If you know, why do you fight it?” I narrow my gaze at him.

“Because unlike you, I don’t drop shit and run when it gets hard, I’ll never abandon her like you did Belle.” I can hear the venom in my own voice, he doesn’t show an ounce of emotion.

“I did what I had to do in order to ensure my daughters safety, will you do the same for your own child?” I take another gulp of my drink and relish in the burn as it slides down my throat.

“I thought we were talking about Sky?” That gets a reaction, he scowls at me, and I smirk. “You see, I know that we have a mole in our midst, I also know that Vince wasn’t your only plant. So, who is thefriendyou have with Sky and what do you gain out of her death?”

“Your very intuitive. Skylar’s end is the beginning of a plague, that none of you are prepared for. She is someone special and very powerful, the fact that she gave you akeyto end her existence is something I didn’t foresee.”
