“Last night was the first time we um—” He stopped mid-sentence then redirected his statement when he saw my face began to contort from annoyance to rage. “Actually, we’ve been in contact since Miss Ayala’s birthday party.”

William cracked up from the side of the room. I did not bother to reprimand him at the moment. I was too angry.

“You have been stalking and corrupting my sister since the party?” I leaned back in my seat. Arms crossed over my chest, I thought I would surely snap any moment. Not even Isabelle would be able to save him.

He shook his head as if he were hiding something.

William stepped over next to me, glaring down at him with his brow furrowed and two of his fingers resting on the surface of my desk. “What?”

“Nothing.” Noah sighed. “Yes, I’ve beenafterher since then.”

I tilted forward, leaning on my arms. “You’re lying. There’s something you’re not telling me. I suggest you tell me the fucking truth because you’re about to join Lindsay.”

William bent over closer to him as well. “Don’t dare forget where your loyalty is.”

Noah took a deep breath then glanced to the ceiling before he brought his gaze back to mine. Looking me directly in the eyes he shook his head. “Fine. Laura actually came after me and I didn’t exactly sayno.” He uncrossed his leg and sat up straight in his seat. “But whatever anger you have about this, please take it out on me and not her. If you want it to stop, it will. If you want to kill me for what I did, do what you wish. Torture me.”

A low laughed echoed from William. “Well, you get points for bravery, I’ll give you that.”

“I’ve been through worse.” Noah rolled his eyes.

William scowled.

“Enough. How did this start at the party?” Impatiently, I waited for an answer as I pulled out a pack of cigarettes from my desk drawer.

“We kept looking at each other and eventually talked.” He sighed, rolling his eyes. “Then she asked for my phone and put her number in it.” He shrugged, “Laura and I are not serious but she’s amazing and—”

“Of course, she’s amazing! She’s my little sister and you—” I paused, clenching my fists, “youwere all over her and I’m a little…weirdabout it.” I was still trying hard to be civil for Isabelle’s sake.

“I won’t see her again if it would make you feel more comfortable.” His eyes trailed to the floor as he sat in silence.

“I think that’s best.” I twisted my chair to William. “Open the windows and porch door.” Lighting a cigarette, I took a deep drag before I continued. “I don’t want you distracted when you should be making sure my fiancée is safe.”

He solemnly nodded. “I understand, boss. I assure you that protecting Isabelle is my main focus here and always will be.”

I gestured toward the hallway door with my cigarette pinched between my fingers. “You can go now.” I deeply inhaled it, letting the smoke drift from my mouth. “When Joseph returns, we will all be meeting about Felipe.”

“Yes, sir.” Standing, he lumbered toward the door seeming disappointed in my decision about my sister. Yet, he did not argue. His shoulders rose and fell as he took a deep breath and gripped the doorknob.

“Noah.” I sat back, resting my elbows on the arms of the chair.

He twisted to me, sliding his hands in his pockets.

“As a thank you for saving Isabelle, I will play as your partner in the golf tournament and William will play as well.”

“Wait, what?” William muttered, jerking his head toward me.

Noah’s eyes darted back and forth between us. “Uh—”

I lifted my palm. “Just go.”

Silently, he exited the office. William stepped around to the front of my desk and sat in the seat Noah had just been in. He crossed his leg and lit a cigarette with a smirk painted on his face. “So what happened exactly?”

“Laura spent the night here with him.” I snuffed out my own cigarette in the ashtray on my desk and stood. Huffing, I marched to the liquor cabinet in the corner. “And I caught them making out this morning as she was leaving.”

He chuckled. “And why are you actually opposed to it, may I ask?”

Yanking off the lid, I poured two glasses of whiskey. “I don’t know really.” I shrugged and meandered back to my desk, sitting back down. I slid his drink toward him. “It’s just too weird for me, Liam. Why do I have to have a better answer than that?”
